  2. Standards for today • SS7H1 The student will analyze continuity and change in Africa leading to the 21st century. • a. Explain how the European partitioning across Africa contributed to conflict, civil war, and artificial political boundaries. • b. Explain how nationalism led to independence in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. • c. Explain the creation and end of apartheid in South Africa and the roles of Nelson Mandela and F.W.de Klerk. • d. Explain the impact of the Pan-African movement.

  3. Why was Africa? • Africa was colonized for 3 reasons- Racism, Religion, and Resources. (the big R) • esources • acism • eligion

  4. What Resources were? • Africa is very rich in natural resources. • Africa has an abundance of people that can be used for physical labor. (slaves) • South Africa has the majority of the world’s gold and gemstones.

  5. How would these resources benefit_________? • They could get the resources for free/cheap, then manufacture and sell them for a huge profit. • European Countries could get rich without using their own resources.

  6. How did _________play a role in colonization? • They wanted to make the Africans more like their own culture, since they believed the African cultures to be inferior.

  7. What role did _____ play in Colonization? • Many Europeans were Christian, and the Churches wanted to spread their religion to the non-believers. • Many Africans followed traditional religions, and were polytheistic. • Missionaries were sent to Africa to convert Africans to Christianity.

  8. Writing Prompt • Do you think it was right for the Europeans to colonize Africa? • Do you think Africans had the right to fight back? • In your opinion, has the continent of Africa recovered from European colonization or is it still fighting the violence of the past?
