  1. Wortstellung(Word Order) Deutsch 1 Frau Spampinato

  2. What about word order? “Regular sentence order” starts with the subject, then the verb, then the “info” z.B. Ich mache am Wochenende meine Hausaufgaben. German word order dictates that the verb is ALWAYS the second element in a sentence! The subject and a verb must ALWAYS be next to each other!!

  3. HOWEVER…what if you don’t start with the subject of the sentence? German also frequently starts sentences with a word or phrase other than the subject. TE VSDO z. B. Am Wochenendemacheichmeine Hausaufgabe. In this case, you must put the verb in 2nd position, then the subject immediately following. . .

  4. What if you have more than 1 time expression?? Time expressions always go from general to specific……. general  specific Ich arbeite morgens um 8 Uhr bei der Schule. Dienstags um 4 Uhr komme ich nach Hause.

  5. And what about other “elements”?? TMP = is the acronym to describe typical word order in German T = Time  um 4 Uhr M = Manner  mit dem Bus P = Place  nach Berlin z.B. Ich fahre um 7 Uhr mit dem Auto nach Wien. (more details as the semester continues…)

  6. Wait… How does that work? • When you start a sentence with a word other than the subject, it looks like this: • Heutesehe ich fern.  Today I’ll watch T.V. • Um halb vierspielen wir Fußball.  At 3:30 we(’ll) play soccer Notice that each sentence is starting with a Time Expression —then the verb is 2nd, then you see the subject next!

  7. How to vary the word order: writing better sentences in German Tip: Use various time expressions or name the location where something is taking place—start sentences with these instead of with “ich” or “du” Examples of time expressions: jeden Tag, am Montag, am Wochenende, um 3 Uhr, etc. • S=subject.V=verb.TE=time expression.D.O.=direct object.Q.W.=question word. • 1 2 3 4 S VTEDO DOV STE TEVSDO QW VSTE

  8. Zum Beispiel… • Here are some examples of sentences with different word orders: • Am DienstaghabeichPhysik. • Spanischhastduam Freitag. • Jeden Mittwochhat Max Mathe. • Was hastduam Montag? (QW)

  9. Üben wir! Rewrite each sentence starting with the underlined word or phrase. z. B. Ich spiele jeden Tag Klavier.  Jeden Tag spiele ich Klavier.

  10. #s 1-5 • Ich habe am Freitag Mathe. • Du hast jeden Tag Deutsch. • Jedes Wochenende spielen wir Tennis. • Du siehst nach der Schule viel fern. • Krista und Christel spielen jeden Morgen Golf. Mathe habe ich am Freitag. Jeden Tag hast du Deutsch. Tennis spielen wir jedes Wochenende. Nach der Schule siehst du viel fern. Jeden Morgen spielen Kirsta und Christel Golf.

  11. #s 6-10 Am Donnerstag spielt Ludwig Hockey. 6. Ludwig spielt am Donnerstag Hockey. 7. Maria und ich hören oft Musik. 8. Du gehst am Wochenende in die Disko. 9. Leonard liest gern im Sommer Bücher. 10. Wir spielen um halb 5 Karten. Musik hören Maria und ich oft. Am Wochenende gehst du in die Disko. Bücherliest Leonard gern im Sommer. Karten spielen wir um halb 5.
