The Braid of Literacy • Literacy= oral language, stories, writing, reading, orthography. • What is orthography? • How does the ‘braid’ thicken and strengthen? • Word Study: hands-on activities; comparing and contrasting ; discovering similarities and differences within and between categories. • During word study, words and pictures are sorted in routines that require children to examine, discriminate, and make critical judgments about speech sounds, spelling patterns, and meanings.

  3. Invented Spelling • Sound familiar? • Charles Read • Carol Chomsky • Ed Henderson: the authors of Words Their Way are some of his students. Their research resulted in efficient, effective ways in which to differentiate phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction.

  4. Why is word study important? Why do youthink word study is important?

  5. Word Study is Important Because… • Explicit instruction without rote drill and practice which can equal memorization. • Being fully literate=fast, accurate word recognition and meanings in text. This also includes accurate production of words in writing. • Automatic and accurate word recognition frees ‘brain power’ so the reader can focus on meaning making or comprehension.

  6. IMPORTANT!! • “Excelling at word recognition, spelling, and vocabulary is not just a matter of memorizing isolated rules and definitions. The best way to develop fast and accurate perception of word features is to engage in meaningful reading and writing, and to have multiple opportunities to examine those same words out of context.”

  7. And what is the purpose? • General Knowledge: what we need to access in order to read, spell, or try and understand the meaning of a new word. • We use our general knowledge in order to make analogies which aid us in reading and spelling. • Specific Knowledge: what we need to know in order to spell specific words that have multiple possible spellings. Ex. From the book: rain.

Types of Errors • Errors dealing with the alphabetic match of letters and sound. • Errors dealing with letter patterns. • Errors dealing with words related in meaning. • It is important to remember that all English learners will make these types of errors during their spelling development and acquisition.

  9. Alphabet • Why is English considered an alphabetic language? • Beginning spellers “rely on the sound embedded in the names of the letters to represent the sounds they are trying to represent.” • Ex. h=ch; BAD for bed

  10. Pattern • The pattern layer overlies the alphabetic layer. • Looking beyond single letter sound match ups. • There is consistency in these patterns. • CVCe; VCCV; VCV • Having knowledge of these patterns will assist learners as they encounter novel words. With knowledge they are able to decode new words, multisyllabic words, and decipher meaning.

  11. Meaning • Groups of letters can represent meaning. • Ex. Prefixes and suffixes (affixes); Greek roots; Latin terms. • This is why many words and morphemes retain their spelling even though the pronunciation may differ. The spelling represents the meaning. • With this, vocabulary and spelling instruction become closely related.

  12. Word Study is DEVELOPMENTAL!! • Instructional level: instruction matches the needs of the child. “Using but confusing.” • This idea of using but confusing refers to the child’s zone of proximal development. • How can we find our children’s instructional level?

  13. Continued… • Orthographic knowledge develops along a continuum. • As children develop and grow the stages they pass through will overlap. • Functional levels: • Independent • Instructional • Frustrational • What are these?

  14. Stages • Emergent Stage: Pre-K thru middle of 1st grade • Letter Name-Alphabetic Stage: K to middle of 2nd grade • Within Word Pattern Stage: Grade 1 thru middle of 4th grade • Syllables and Affixes Stage: Grades 3-8 • Derivational Relations: Grades 5-12
