  1. What performance measures does AECS use? Are these adequate, in your opinion? Can you suggest any more? Should the performance measures be different for the two business models pursued by AECS?

  2. There are two sections in AECS: -Main hospital for the paid patients -Free hospital for the non paying patients In spite of the above, same group of doctors and nurses serves both sections. The surgeons at AECS take only 10 minutes per surgery while industry standard is 30 minutes. The infection rate is only 4 per 10,000 cases as opposed to 6 per 10,000 in UK. • 400 surgeries per doctor per month as opposed to the average of 25 surgeries per doctor per month.

  3. AECS organizes camps to attract patients in rural areas. • Aravind set up a factory as a separate venture to produce inocular lens as importing was expensive. • The measures are not adequate

  4. What are the concern areas for AECS in realizing its vision? • Create more awareness among the people about the importance of eye care. • Reduce the infection rate • Provide adequate salaries to the doctors • Conduct camps all over the nation • Further bring down the defect rate
