  2. Out Lines • Introduction • Flight Control Surfaces • Block Diagram • Components and functions • Advantages • Applications

  3. Introduction • Autopilot is a system of automatic controls which holds the aircraft on any selected magnetic heading… • In this project our goal is to control the roll angle of the aircraft in the auto pilot system..

  4. Main flight Control System • Aircraft is controlled by three main surfaces: • AILERON • RUDDER • ELEVATOR PURPOSE TO ENABLE THE PILOT TO EXERCISE CONTROL OVER THE AIRCRAFT DURING ALLL PORTIONS OF FLIGHT.

  5. AILERONS • The ailerons are one of three primary flight control surfaces found on aircraft.. • Aileronsare small hinged sections on the outboard portion of a wing. • They are movable surfaces that control movement about the longitudinal axis--called roll. • Ailerons can be used to generate a rolling motion for an aircraft

  6. Roll motion of Aircraft by Ailerons

  7. RUDDER • On the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer is the Rudder. • This controls the yaw or the left/right sliding movements of the aircraft. • On a real aircraft, this is controlled by the foot pedals • When the pilot pushes the left pedal, the rudder deflects left. Pushing the right pedal causes the rudder to deflect right.

  8. Left/Right(YAW) Motion by Rudder

  9. Elevators • The elevator is on the tail of the aircraft, moving the elevator causes the nose of the aircraft to go up or down, allowing the aircraft to climb or descent.. • Elevators control the up/down motion of aircraft that is called as pitch.. • When the pilot pulls the stick backward, the elevators go up. Pushing the stick forward causes the elevators to go down.

  10. Up/Down(Pitch) motion of aircraft by Elevator

  12. The aircraft roll control provides the components & functions including: • Controller gain • Aileron actuator • Aircraft dynamics • Gyro

  13. Aileron actuator • Actuator is the device that cause the process to provide the output.. • So,the Aileron Actuator is the device which cause the movement of ailerons..

  14. ROLL ANGLE • The ailerons are used to bank the aircraft; to cause one wing tip to move up and the other wing tip to move down.. • Both the Ailerons always move in opposite to each other.. • Lowering the aileron on one wing raises the aileron on the other.. • The wing with the lowered aileron rises because of its increase lift, and the wing with the raised aileron moves downward because of its decreased lift.

  15. Angle which is generated by the movement of Ailerons is called as Roll Angle. • Roll is defined as a rotation about the • x-axis, or longitudinal axis, of a flying vehicle.

  16. Gyro • The GYROS (TO SENSE WHAT AIRPLANE IS DOING) • Directional Gyro(Heading Indicator) is used in an aircraft to inform the pilot of his heading. • The Gyro works using a gyroscope, tied to the aircraft horizontal..

  17. AirCraft Dynamics • Flight dynamics is the science of air and space vehicle orientation and control in three dimensions.. • AirCraft Dynamics uses for determination of the positionand velocity of aircraft at some arbitrary time..

  18. Simulink Diagram

  19. Response of Roll angle

  20. Advantages • Auto pilot system reduce the work strain of pilot.. • Auto pilot roll controlling reduces the fatigue of controlling the aircraft in flight by the pilot.

  21. Applications • It is used in the auto missiles to control the roll angle.. • It can be used in almost every aircraft for auto pilot controlling..
