  1. Explanatory notes on Mill video Taken at a Platinum mine, Rustenburg, South Africa

  2. Explanatory notes on Mill video View inside the mill Taken with an Infrared camera To determine whether the MSS HMI accurately depicts the ore angle in the mill

  3. Human Machine interface(HMI) of the Mill Safe Start HMI of the MSS in a control room of a mine Graphical depiction of the ore and the mill

  4. Explanatory notes on Mill video Camera is facing towards the back of the mill Top of the ore/ water mixture

  5. Explanatory notes on Mill video Direction in which the mill is moving Approximate angle of ore

  6. HMI interface As the drum turns, the angle of the mill and the ore are calculated and depicted by the graphical mill turning

  7. HMI interface At the same time the angle of the mill drum is plotted against the ore angle ore angle mill drum angle

  8. HMI interface • If the ore has not tumbled yet, the mill angle is the same as the ore angle, and • the graph stays at 45deg

  9. TRIP • If the ore sticks to the drum, the ore angle does not deviate from the mill angle and • The mill will trip

  10. As the ore tumbles, the angle of the ore changes relative to the mill angle

  11. SAFE • As the mill drum keeps on turning, the angle keeps changing • But the ore angle flattens out

  12. Ore and water tumbling

  13. A Safe start and no need for the MSS to trip the mill!
