Client focus within the organisation: • Improving GCSE results (5 grades A*-C) • Improve attendance and punctuality of students • Improve focus of students in lessons “Results at GCSE are also affected by the persistent absence of a minority of students and the below average attendance in the school overall. The school is taking every possible step to improve attendance with support from the local authority and national strategies.” Ofsted Report 2010

Research Focus… • Is it necessary that Dance is compulsory in Key Stage 3 Education? • Initial Answer: Yes • Conclusion: Yes • Methods used: Direct observation, Participant observation, Questionnaires & Focus groups. • “Anyone can enjoy dancing regardless of their age or background, if they are disabled or non-disabled, whether or not they have danced before, and whatever their shape and size. Dance can be done as part of a group or practised alone and can happen in a variety of places – including social, education, community, arts and health settings. At its simplest, dance involves moving rhythmically to music. Anyone can do this with benefits to their physical health.” Arts Council England “Dance and Health: The benefits for all ages”

Do you think Dance should be compulsory for Key stage 3 students or should it be optional? • Yes it should be compulsory No it should be optional • Please explain briefly the reason for your answer… • A dance not only has health benefits, it has social, emotional and cultural benefits. • Do you think dance is important within the National Curriculum? • Yes No • Do you feel you get to teach a substantial amount of dance technique and content to Key stage 3 students? • Yes No • Does the behaviour of the pupils affect how much practical dance you can teach in a lesson? • Yes No • Does the set/level of the class affect how much practical dance work can be carried out? • Yes No • Have students told you they picked GCSE Dance due to their experiences in Key stage 3 dance? • Yes No • If Dance was to be made optional at Key stage 3 do you think it would decrease the number of student’s that pick Dance at GCSE level? • Yes No

  9. Conclusion… • What is the answer to your question? • My findings challenged my original answer that Dance should be compulsory in Key Stage 3 Education and gave me mixed views on my hypothesis. Overall I believe that Dance should be compulsory in Key Stage 3 Education. The fact that some of the students had no interest in dance did not reflect the feelings of the entire group. Therefore, dance at Key Stage 3 had mixed opinions but can be seen as being beneficial for all students due to the health, social and cultural benefits and whether they like it or not is due to personal opinion.
