  8. III. Mass a. mass- the amount of matter in an object ** it does not change from one place to another

  9. b. Mass and Inertia 1. inertia- the resistance of an object to changes in motion 2. the more mass an object has, the greater its inertia

  11. 3. mass is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg) 1000mg = 1 g 1000g = 1 kg

  15. Solids are measured in cubic centimeters or centimeters cubed (cm ) 2. Volume = length x width x height V = L x W x H 3

  23. IV. Density a. density- a measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume of an object

  24. 1. in other words, it’s how much matter is contained in a certain amount of space

  29. Examples: if an object has a mass of 50g and a volume of 10cm3, what is its density? D = m v D = 50g/10cm3 D = 5g/cm3

  30. Example: If a liquid has a volume of 5ml and a mass of 10 g, what is its density? D = m/v D = 10g/5ml D = 2g/ml

  31. 3 Example: If the density of a diamond is 3.5g/cm and its volume is .5cm , what is its mass? mass = d x v mass = 3.5g/cm3 x .5cm3 mass = 1.75g 3

  34. V. Weight A. Weight- The measure of the force of gravity between objects 1. gravity- the force of attraction between objects

  35. 2. the greater the mass of an object the greater its gravitational force 3. Your weight is a direct measure of the planet’s force pulling you toward it center.

  36. B. Weight = gravity x mass Weight = 9.8m/s/s x the object’s mass Ex. Weight = 9.8m/s/s x 3kilograms = 29.4 kg m/s/s or 29.4n

  37. C. Weight can be measured in newtons (N) or pounds (lbs.) — about every 1 pound = 4 newtons

  38. Example: If an object has a mass of 50kg, what is its weight in newtons? Weight = gravity x mass W = 9.8m/s/s x 50kg W = 490N

  39. Example: If an object weighs 500N, what is its mass? weight = gravity x mass 500N = 9.8m/s/s x mass 51kg = mass
