PCI bus, PCI Express, Accelerated graphics portbus

  • Some newer PCs actually use an additional "bus" that is specifically designed for graphics communications only.

  • The word "bus" is in quotes because it isn't actually a bus, it's a port: the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP).

  • The distinction between a bus and port is that a bus is generally designed for multiple devices to share the medium, while a port is only for two devices.

  • AGP bus:

  • This is a high-speed 32-bit bus specifically for a video card.

  • It runs at 66MHz (AGP 1x), 133MHz (AGP 2x), 266MHz (AGP 4x), or 533MHz (AGP 8x), which allows for a bandwidth of up to 2,133MBps.

Accelerated Graphics Port

  • The Accelerated Graphics Port (often shortened to AGP) is a high-speed point-to-point channel for attaching a video card to a computer's motherboard.

  • PCI Bus: an intermediate bus located between the processor bus (NorthBridge) and the I/O bus (SouthBridge).

  • PCI bus: This is usually a 33MHz 32-bit bus found in virtually all newer 486 systems and Pentium and higher processor systems.

  • Some newer systems include an optional 66MHz 64-bit version—mostly workstations or server-class systems.

  • This bus is generated by either the chipset North Bridge in North/South Bridge chipsets or the I/O Controller Hub in chipsets using hub architecture.

  • High-speed peripherals, such as SCSI adapters, network cards, video cards, and more, can be plugged into PCI bus slots.

PCI:

  • PCI was introduced in the mid 1990's, and are still common today.

  • Some late 486 motherboards had two or three PCI slots in addition to 16-bit ISA slots, and they became standard with Pentium systems (most Pentium motherboards, Pentium II motherboards, and some Pentium III motherboards still had some ISA slots in addition to the PCI slots).

PCI Express

  • PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express), officially abbreviated as PCIe (though generally written as PCI-E), is a computer expansion card standard designed to replace the older PCI, and AGP standards.

  • PCIe 3.0 is the latest standard for expansion cards

  • PCI Express is used in server, and industrial applications
