  4. Censorship and the Hays Code Picture from Google Images Joseph I. Breen wanted the film Industry to have traditional moral values in film and wanted to censor any inappropriate scene. By 1934 The Hays Code was enforced and films of that time were featuring little or no immoral subjects.

  6. The End of the Code in the 60s The Code was enforced for many years until the 1960s. The films of the 60s started to bring up subjects that were not allowed for many years. By 1968, the Hays Code was abolished and MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America ) was created to start the rating system. The picture on the left features the first X rated film to win best picture Midnight Cowboy in 1969.

Pre-Code vs. Media Ethics Filmmaker’s Responsibility Social Impacts of Pre-Code Films • Filmmakers often say “they are not responsible for the social impacts of their own creations.” • Some people feel that content in film is a form a freedom of speech. • Smoking and or drugs can influence young people to smoke. • Language can be “over used.” • Sexual immorality can have young people, have sex without thinking about it. • Violence in film has often led people to create more violence. • Drinking in films can have an influence on young people.
