  2. Fight For Flash Using EN to create adaptable email to MP action WEDNESDAY 19TH JUNE Fight For Flash

  3. What is ‘Flash’? Flash Glucose Monitoring is a new technology people living with Type 1 diabetes can use to monitor their blood sugar levels. It sits on the back of your arm, and can be ‘swiped’ by a monitor or your phone. FLASH MEANS: • Far fewer finger pricks • Huge lifestyle benefits • People tend to test more • Better managing of people’s condition • Long term: reduction of complications and hospital admissions FIGHT FOR FLASH

  4. What was the issue? HOW YOU COULD GET FLASH: • Purchasing cost: £120 a month. • Flash was made available to be prescribed on the NHS in November 2017. • Northern Ireland and Wales moved quickly • Guidelines were created in England on who should qualify for Flash. • In Scotland and England, the decision to provide it for free on prescription was left to local decision makers. • This meant ~200 clinical commissioning group and 14 Health Boards to agree to prescribe Flash • A postcode lottery of access emerged. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  5. What was the Fight For Flash? DIABETES UK’S ASK: Everyone who could benefit from Flash should have access to it on prescription. We needed every CCG and HB to give access to Flash on prescription to those who met a published criteria. WHAT DIABETES UK DID: • November - March: Email your CCG / HB action • Had limited success • ~25% of areas were prescribing Flash • We pivoted to MPs, asking them to attend an event in parliament and write to their CCG FIGHT FOR FLASH

  6. The MP action... What we wanted: • To make this niche issue real to MPs + MSPs • Highlight the massive benefit to people’s lifestyle • Not do another generic ETT action What we asked for: • An easy to use ‘finger prick’ calculator of number of finger pricks people had done in their lives on the front page • A ticker of the number of finger pricks done by action takers • The number to be imposed in emails to MPs + MSPs and on to a shareable image • And it had to filter by nation and by MP / MSP BUDGET: £2,500 FIGHT FOR FLASH

  7. Calculating the finger pricks HOW IT WORKS • Two question fields, one for how long and one for how many times a day • Calculation runs and puts answer into a hidden question field that’s stored when the supporter submits the page • The two questions are not mandatory - so the supporter doesn’t have to divulge this personal information FIGHT FOR FLASH

  8. Calculating the finger pricks CONSENT TO PROCESS THIS DATA • If a supporter did choose to answer these questions, an extra checkbox appeared which is mandatory. • If a supporter tries to submit the page without answering this question, some text is shown to explain why they need to tick the box. DELETION OF THIS DATA • Diabetes UK only wanted to keep this data for the specific purpose of this action and to delete it as soon as possible. • A separate PHP script running on another server which used the Engaging Networks data tools to overwrite the answers given for these questions every 15 minutes. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  9. Calculating the finger pricks SHOWING THE TOTAL TO THE SUPPORTER • On page 2, the data stored on the first page in the hidden question field is shown to the supporter. INCLUDING THE TOTAL IN THE EMAIL TO MPs • And the same question data is shown within the message to MPs. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  10. Total finger pricks ON THE FIRST PAGE OF THE ACTION • The total number of finger pricks from all supporters who took action and gave the information ON THE SECOND PAGE OF THE ACTION • The total number of finger pricks from all supporters is also shown instead of the personalised calculation if a supporter chose not to answer those questions. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  11. HOW IT WORKS • A separate PHP script running on another server which takes the number of finger pricks from the hidden calculated data field each time a supporter takes action, and adds it to the running total. A script on the EN page looks to the file on the other server for the latest running total. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  12. Messages to MPs CUSTOM MESSAGE CONTENT DEPENDING ON THE SUPPORTER’S POSTCODE • Action uses Engaging Networks MP dataset • Second custom lookup running on the page using javascript • Custom dataset of CCGs and alongside each CCG is a paragraph of content in the custom dataset • This variable paragraph of content inserted into the message to MPs depending on whether the technology was already available within the supporter’s CCG area or not • Had to be done this way as the CCG areas do not match up with MP constituencies - so one MP could receive messages from supporters in two different CCG areas, one which already offered the technology and one which didn’t, further highlighting the postcode lottery As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to attend an APPG on 19th July, 2.15pm to 4.00pm, Committee Room 10 because NHS Lambeth CCG still isn't providing access to a new technology which could mean that unnecessary finger pricking is a thing of the past. NHS Lambeth CCG is one of the areas which still doesn't allow Flash glucose monitoring technology to be prescribed. FIGHT FOR FLASH

  13. Messages to MPs CUSTOM MESSAGE CONTENT DEPENDING WHETHER THE SUPPORTER GAVE THEIR FINGER PRICK DATA OR NOT FIGHT FOR FLASH

  15. Share functionality FIGHT FOR FLASH

  16. Share functionality CUSTOM SHARE IMAGE • Again using an external custom PHP script • Image produced by Diabetes designer team with a gap top left - and separate images produced for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to match the platform’s image size preferences • The individual’s finger prick calculation placed in the empty space, the generated image saved onto the external server, and linked to when the supporter clicks to share on the thank you page • Added custom code block to allow share on Instagram if the supporter is using a mobile • If the supporter didn’t give their own finger prick data, the total amount of finger pricks is used instead FIGHT FOR FLASH

  17. Extra features BUILT WITHIN ENGAGING NETWORKS • Personalised finger prick calculation • Variable MP message data BUILT ON TOP OF ENGAGING NETWORKS • Totaliser of all finger pricks • CCG lookup alongside the MP action • Custom share image • Data removal FIGHT FOR FLASH

  18. The results NUMBERS: • 2700 people took action • ~400 shares on social • Over 109 million finger pricks • 55 MPs we know of wrote to their CCG • 3 MPs set up their own petitions • One MP used the number of finger pricks in a speech FIGHT FOR FLASH

  19. And the campaign? FiGHT FOR FLASH

  20. Thank You. Andy Soar, Senior Campaigner, Diabetes UK FIGHT FOR FLASH
