General Information • Class Period (Time) – Recommended once weekly. • 35 minutes (minimum) Elementary School (ES) • 40 minutes (minimum) Middle School (MS) • Session 1 (04NOV-08NOV) Introduction Week – How to Use the ePals website. • Session2 (11NOV-15NOV) • Session 3 (18NOV-22NOV) Module 1 – Sharing Cultures • Session 4 (25NOV-29NOV) Special Session – Thanksgiving (Chinese classes only) • Session 5 (02DEC-06DEC) Skype Session 1 • Session 6 (09DEC-13DEC) • Session 7 (16DEC-20DEC) Module 2 – Culture Cuisine Session 8 (23DEC-27DEC) • Special Session – Holiday Celebration (Chinese classes only)

  4. Required equipment for all classes 1. Computer and Projector – for course curriculum PPT delivery. • Laptops or computer lab (one per student or group designated) for email and PPT. • Internet access for questionnaires. Materials • Lesson Plans (PPT in workspace) • PPT decks – ePals Information, Sharing Culture, Culture Cuisine, Skype. • All materials will be available in the Workspace. Post all emails and PPTs to the workspace.

  5. Posting/Sharing Student Work • Teacher compiled emails. • PPTs ready for sharing. • Post and share all work in the Class Workspace.

  6. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures • Session 3 – Overview Sharing Cultures Module 1 Week 2 Highlights: 1. Receive Introductory Email from partner ePals class. 2. Create Sharing Cultures PPT slides to share with partner ePals class. Check List: • Read and Discuss ePals Introductory Email. • Students create slides for Sharing Cultures PPT. • Present Ideas and Share. • Teacher compiles Sharing Cultures slides and sends to ePals class. Deliverables: 1. Create Sharing Cultures PPT to share with partner class. 2. Share PPT in Workspace.

  10. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures • Read and discuss our ePals’ email – EMAIL!!! (10ES-15minMS) • Notes to Teacher: Excitement!! Communication from the ePals class!! • Show and read the email – this will help students to comprehend through their strengths (listening/reading). • The class has 10minsES or 15minsMS to read the email and to think about creating a response. • Please assign a note taker to record the students’ reaction, comments, questions, and answers to ePals’ questions. • Encourage students to talk about the email and to think about questions to ask their ePals. • Incorporate these notes into the next friendly email to the partner ePals class.

  11. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures • 3. Review the assignment – Topics and Questions for the PPT (5minsES/MS) • Notes to Teacher: • Check students’ comfort with using power point and identify some students who may need some extra help. • It may be helpful to pair students with PPT experience with those who are new to creating a PPT.

  12. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures • 4. Students create their PPT slides about culture and cultural artifacts to share with your ePals (15minsES-15minsMS) • Students work in groups (by topic), research and share information. • Remind the students that they have 15 minutes to create their 1-2 PPT slides. • Please have the email and open so that the students can answer all of their ePals’ questions. • This PPT is a class generated PPT that requires input from your students. • The end product will be compiled by the teacher from the students’ work and sent to the ePals partner class.

  13. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures 4. Students create their PPT slides about culture and cultural artifacts to share with your ePals (15minsES-15minsMS) • Topics: • Woodcarving and Folk Art • Glass-Blowing • The Charleston Dance • Navajo Weaving • Holiday Wreaths

  14. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures • 4. Students create their PPT slides about culture and cultural artifacts to share with your ePals (15minsES-15minsMS) • Questions - applied to each topic: • What is the history of XXX in the US? • Is XXX popular in your area? Why or why not? • Should we preserve XXX? Why or why not? • Share a fun or interesting story about XXX. It can be a story you found in your research or from your personal experience. • Summarize what XXX represents in US culture?

  15. SESSION 3 (18NOV-22NOV) • Module 1 Week 2 – Sharing Cultures 5. Present ideas – Students sharing what they learned. (5minsES/MS) • Notes to Teacher: • Select several students to share what they learned during this module. • This is an excellent time for students to share their knowledge of culture and work on their English language presentational skills.
