Sapere – to know how or to know facts • Sapere translates the verb “know” when you know how to do something (infinitive in Italian) • Io so nuotare; tu sai parlare bene; Marco sa suonare la chitarra, voi sapete studiare, loro sanno cantare. • Sapere also translates to know facts (a subordinate clause that contains a verb in Italian) • So come andare in centro; Sappiamo che Franco e Marisa si sono lasciati; Sanno dove trovare un buon ristorante

  7. Conoscere – to know or be familiar with a person, place or thing • Conoscere means to be familiar with someone, to make their acquaintance, to be familiar with a place and to know a language. (it is followed by just a noun or noun phrase with NO verb) • Conosco il fratello di Luisa; conosci Roma?; conoscono i miei genitori; conoscete l’inglese o il tedesco?

  8. Al passato prossimo • Conoscere in the passato prossimo (helping verb AVERE) means to have met someone for the first time. • Hai consciuto l’amico di Franco? Sí, l’ho conosciuto ieri. • Sapere in the passato prossimo means to find out about something • Ieri ho saputo che Franco e Marisa si sono lasciati.
