  1. Monday, February 14th Happy Valentine’s Day! • Set up Page 23in notebook : Fighting WWII • LEFT SIDE • EQ: “What military strategies did the United States and its Allies pursue to defeat the Axis powers in WWII? • Guess • Final answer • Preview • Write one paragraph on the strategy you would pursue if you were a coach whose team is about to play the top-ranked team in HS basketball and half the team is caught in traffic. • 1) Play defense, stall, and try to keep the score close in hopes that your other players will arrive soon. • 2) Go on the offense and attack the opponent’s MVP, hoping to tire him/her and get him/her to fowl. • 3) Attack the weakest player, even if it allows the MVP to stay rested and remain on offense.

  2. WWII Preview • When the United States entered WWII, the Axis forces were superior in number and strength, much like the stronger team in the Preview. Military analysts for the U.S. and its allies, like the coach in the Preview, had to determine which strategies to pursue to defeat the dominating Axis Powers. • As a team, you will take on the roles of the American military analysts and make recommendations for how to win the war. • First, you will evaluate military strategies by examining background information and maps of the battlefront. Tomorrow, you will present your recommendations in a military briefing.

  3. Fighting WWII on RIGHT of p. 23 • As a group, you will mark the areas addressed on the map with a star. (CHAPTER 36) • Individually, on the right side of p. 23, you will review the following locations and list 3 facts about events that occurred in each of these areas • 36.2: North Africa, Poland, Soviet Union (3 facts total, 1 for each) • 36.3: 3 facts total for Italy & Stalingrad; 3 facts on Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge • 36.4: Philippines, Tokyo, Coral Sea (3 facts total, 1 for each) • 36.5: 3 facts total for Midway & Okinawa; 3 facts on Hiroshima & Nagasaki

  4. WWII EQ on the LEFT of p. 23 • World War II Military Actions and Strategies • “Europe First” strategy • Postponement of an invasion of France • Decisions not to bomb the concentration camps • Operation Overload • Liberation of the concentration camps • Leapfrogging strategy • Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa • Decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan • Should the U.S. be praised or criticized for the military strategies or actions pursued during WWII???

  5. Tuesday, February 15th • The United States recently entered the war on the side of the Allies. Unfortunately, the U.S. has limited military divisions ready for immediate deployment to Europe. Which military strategy do you advise President Roosevelt to pursue? • 1) Deploy divisions to Britain. Launch an immediate cross-channel invasion of France. Then move eastward to liberate Paris. • 2) Deploy divisions to the Mediterranean and launch an invasion of Italy from naval ships. Capture the island of Sicily first, and then advance north onto the mainland. • 3) Defend the Soviet Union. Move Allied divisions into the western part of the Soviet Union and help the Red Army defend itself against German divisions. • 4) Launch an invasion of N. Africa from Egypt and from naval ships in the Atlantic. Advance toward Tunisia and defeat German divisions.

  6. Military briefing • Choose an option • Gather supporting arguments from the text and the maps • Turn in one page per group with the following (each person in the group must complete something with his/her signature by it) • “Our group believes strategy ___ is the best option because…” • For which WWII military strategies do you think the U.S. should be praised? • For which WWII military strategies do you think the U.S. should be criticized? • If you were the president during this time, how might you have conducted the war differently?

  7. Make-up Work: Due Wednesday • Once your group has completed the Military briefing assignment, you may work on make-up work or on the WWII vocabulary which is due a week from Friday. • Remember: Quiz on WWII vocab this Friday • Early Release tomorrow (no American History)

  8. Wednesday, February 16th • Early Release: No American History
