Estar + participles. Verbs can work as adjectives. Some we have worked with already: Sentada : seated ( sentar ) Parada : standing ( parar ) Cansado : tired ( cansar ) Las chicas están sentadas . Juan está parado . Gloria y yo estamos parados . Él está sentado .

  2. Verbs can work as adjectives • Some we have worked with already: • Sentada: seated (sentar) • Parada: standing (parar) • Cansado: tired (cansar) Las chicasestánsentadas. Juan estáparado. Gloria y yoestamosparados. Élestásentado.

  3. These are conditions; not ongoing activities… • Grandma is asleep (describes grandma). • The problem is solved. (describes the problem) • The window is broken. (describes the window) • The dress is made. (describes the dress) • The book is written. (describes the book)

  4. Participle for –ar Drop –ar Add –ado Pintado Jugado Sentado Participle for –er/-ir Drop ending Add –ido Conocido Comido Definido Use the present of estar + participle

  5. *OJO* Participle are adjectives • They agree in gender and number with the subject. • La pintura está pintada por Frida Kahlo. • Juan y Jorge están dormidos. • Miami está eliminado de los finales.

  8. When using this in the past, estar is always imperfect • La abuela estaba dormida. • El problema estaba resuelto. • Los cuadros estaban pintados. • El libro estaba escrito.
