  1. Creating a STEM Model or Program at C. S. Brown High School

What we have accomplished: • August 2012 • Informed the community with newspaper article • Shared information about STEM at CSB High School Open House • September 2012 • Designated STEM programs/schools to visit • Reviewed the Rubric for STEM Models as it relates to what is in place currently at CSB High School • Visited/toured the Wayne School of Engineering in Goldsboro, NC • Attended the NC Education Summit sponsored by the Senator Howard Lee Institute

What we have accomplished (continued): • October 2012 • Visited the Wayne School of Engineering (Faculty and staff) • Initiated partnerships with local STEM centered programs—4 H, The Science House, NC School of Science and Math • Initiated contact with resources at colleges and universities—NC State University, NC A&T, Chowan University, NC Central University • Toured the Academy of the Arts, Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Horry County, South Carolina (Principal and Central office Representative)

What we have accomplished (continued): • November, 2012 • Hosted STEM-focused Career Fair at CSB High School • Participants: Nucor Steel, Roanoke Electric, RCCC, HC 4-H Cooperative Extension, Kee Builders, ECPI of Va., JobLink Career Center, Chowan University, HC Robotics Club—BEARS, The Town of Ahoskie (Waste Water Treatment) • January/February, 2013 • Initiated use of NC Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) 4 courses • Student tours of local businesses (Nucor, SECU, etc…)

Current Planning: • January/February, 2013 • Begin putting STEM pieces in place: set criteria, application process • Visits to established STEM Schools (Warren County, Durham County, Worchester Mass.) • Initiate planning of STEM specifics for CSB High School • STEM invitational for HCPS faculty and staff (Overview of the vision for the STEM Model/Program)

  6. Current Planning (continued): • Planned tentative date to meet with DPI representative regarding new NC STEM matrix • Planned tentative date to meet with DPI representative regarding AP STEM opportunities from College Board • Conducted meetings/conversations with Director of CTE regarding support for college and career readiness within the STEM model/program

  7. Current Planning (continued): • March, 2013 • Continue information sessions with the public, recruitment of students from HCMS, Interest meetings with parents and potential students • Plan for and begin capital projects for the building and technology • Plan strategic professional development for faculty/staff: Content pedagogy training (Curriculum framework for each nine weeks/interdisciplinary project based learning etc…) Engineering Design Process training AP STEM Prep Courses-College Board

Future Planning: • April/May, 2013: • Placement of faculty/staff for STEM program (reapplication/interview process) • Placement of students for program • Begin and complete planning with faculty/staff regarding vision and mission of the STEM model/program • Continue informational sharing sessions in the community • Summer-Early Fall 2013 • Take faculty/staff to Horry County school visit and additional established STEM Schools • Continue initiating partnerships with local businesses, agencies and colleges/universities

  9. Future Planning (continued): Vision Framework • 9th grade career exploration (minimum 4 areas of interest-job shadowing) • 10th grade continued job shadowing with Mentorship (minimum 2 areas of interest) • 11th internships • 12th continue internship or secure an apprenticeship
