Background • Bank Gender Policy – 2001 • Gender Plan of Action 2004-2007 • Presidents Working Group on Gender • The Bank’s MT Strategy (2008-2012) Key Priority Areas: Infrastructure, Governance, Private Sector & Higher Education Special Applicability: Agriculture, Fragile States, MICs and Regional Integration

  3. Overall Goal & Objectives • Overall goal : To support economic growth and poverty reduction in RMCs • Objective: To promote sustainable and equitable economic empowerment of women and men

  4. Key Focus Areas (i)Support investments which promote women’s economic empowerment: • Infrastructure: roads, energy, water and sanitation • Agriculture development • Private sector (entrepreneurship development) • TVET & Higher Education

  5. Key Focus Areas (ii)Supporting RMCs governance and policy reform. • Support legal reforms for gender equality • Support policy developments for GE • Strengthen Network with regional organizations (AU, RECs etc) & Other Partners

  6. Key Focus Areas (iii)Institutional capacity building and knowledge building at the Bank and RMCs: • TA to RMCs in Gender Mainstreaming • Capacity Building in Gender Statistics • Economic Sector Work and Studies

  7. Institutionalizing GM: Progress • Gender Climate Change & Sustainable Development Unit (OSUS) Established • Mainstreaming GE into Results Framework • Gender Experts’ Membership in Country Teams • Strengthening Cross-department work • Indicators to measure progress

  8. On-going Work • Women’s Economic Empowerment • Micro-Finance Trust Fund – Focusing on Women (2009) • New Agriculture Strategy Developed • Governance Strategy Developed • Women’s Entrepreneurship Development Workshops (Egypt & Cameroon in 2009 and Nairobi 2010)

  9. On-going Work • Institutional Capacity Building of AfDB & RMCs • Pilot in Gender Stats (2 countries 2010) • Gender Profiles • Studies (Gender Assessment of Operations)

  10. On-going Work • Supporting RMCs in Governance • Multi-National Assessment of the Practice of Gender Responsive Budgets in Four Countries • Capacity Strengthening of RMCs in Gender Responsive Budgets
