  1. The soul of a film On The Waterfront

  2. Learning goal • I will understand what Kazan is exploring about human nature and the world We will be focusing on describing the deeper purpose of the film

  3. What is happening here?

  4. The ending • Bit confusing • Lots of different emotions and motivations at play • Barry & the longshoremen • Terry • Edie’s smile • Friendly • Ties into the values and the message of the film. Understand this and get the ending.

  5. The film’s values • Loyalty – “well I think he still owns you” • Individual Choice – “it’s your own conscious that’s gotta do the asking” • Intellect over physicality – “in this country we’ve got ways of fighting back” • Personal responsibility – “[when someone] tries to stop him doing his duty as a citizen it’s a crucifixion” • Truth – “what’s rattin’ to them is telling the truth to you” • Women as caregivers – “quit worrying about the truth all the time and worry about yourself”

  6. What do the values tell us? • Kazan believes in these things. • When he testified in 1952 he was vilified and shunned by his friends. • “I hate the Communists and have for many years, and don’t feel right about giving up my career to defend them. I will give up my film career if it is in the interests of defending something I believe in, but not this”

  7. This shows that… • Kazan made an individual choice that stood against the conformity of his peers. • He decided that it was better to be true to himself than loyal to things he didn’t believe in. • He risked exclusion because of these core values and suffered emotionally and mentally. • He didn’t agree with the personal attacks he endured afterwards. • He took personal responsibility for his decision. • He gained moral clarity in his own conscience.

  8. Link these to the plot of the film… • Terry is loyal to Friendly and Charley. This is misguided. • Terry has to decide what he believes in. • He realizes he is worth more than how he has been treated. • He considers a violent revenge but decides otherwise. He confirms what the commission already knows. • He is shunned but decides his dignity is worth more than that. He suffers mentally and physically for his beliefs. • He is triumphant in proving his actions were right and regains his dignity.

  9. So what is the soul of OTW? • Soul – the deeper purpose, the essence, the spirit. • The message of the film is … • Kazan’s own experience with the HUAC is reflected through Terry Malloy. • Kazan wants the viewer to understand … • Kazan wants the viewer to see …

  10. So what is really happening here? Terry’s final walk represents…
