  2. Stimulants: The Facts • Stimulants:are substances that speed up the body’s functions. • heart beats faster, increase breathing rate and raise blood pressure.

  3. STIMULANTS: Examples • Tobacco • Amphetamines • Methamphetamines • Cocaine • Crack • Caffeine • Ecstasy • Marijuana?

  4. Stimulants: Medical use • Prescription: • Some stimulants may be prescribed to help people with certain physical and emotional problems, such as ADHD. • ADHD medications are the most commonly prescribed stimulants. Use should be carefully monitored by a physician. • Can still be addictive when used appropriately.

  5. Stimulants: Abuse • When misused or abused… • Physical dependency (Addiction) • Can lead to sleep disturbances/problems • Fatigue • Depression • Paranoia • Can lead to heart and lung damage • Can result in fatal seizures (death?)

  6. STIMULANTS: Physical Effects • Short-term • Increased Heart Rate, Blood Pressure • Increase respiration (breathing rate) • Loss of coordination • Sudden collapse • Addiction (Physical Dependence) • Long-term • Damage to heart and nervous system • Can cause stroke, heart attack, seizures • Can result in death

  7. STIMULANTS: Mental Effects • Short-term • Blurred Vision • Dizziness • Anxiety • Increase in alertness, energy and feelings of well-being • Addiction (Psychological Dependence) • Irritability • Long-term • Depression • Memory Loss

  8. STIMULANTS: Social Effects • Short-term • May say things that you do not mean; causing strain on friendships • Long-term • Addiction; possibly leading to theft, violent behavior, etc.

  9. STIMULANTS: Interesting • The effects of some stimulants are so mild that people may not even realize they are using a drug. • Example: • Caffeine  the effects of caffeine differ from one person to the next.
