  2. This course is for anyone who would like to learn how to find and access electronic books and journals. The course will show you where to find e-books and e-journals, how to search within them and how to find and download full text articles. The course is provided by the Tameside Hospital’s Knowledge & Library Services. It is based on the one designed by Laura Sims of Blackpool Teaching Hospital NHS FT.   4. Athens You will need an NHS Athens username and password to access the electronic books and journals. If you do not already have an Athens account click here to register now. If you have any problems or questions about Athens please contact the library. Click to continue

  5. E-journals To access the Trust A-Z List of full text e-journals , you can click on the link on the library webpage and scroll to the ‘journals’ links. http://www.tamesidehospital.nhs.uk/our-services/non-clinical_services/knowledge_Library_Services Click to continue

  6. E-journals To access all full text e-journals available to you, go directly to NICE Evidence Search and follow the ‘Journals and databases’ links. www.evidence.nhs.uk Click to continue

  7. E-journals Log in with your Athens username and password to access the full list of journals. Click to continue

  8. E-journals Once you are logged into Athens you can either search the full list by exact title, using the start of the title, or by topic or words in a title. Or you can use the A-Z links. You can also search for a journal using the ISSN if you know it. Click to continue

  14. E-journals Viewing the results… Below the journal title you will see available dates. Some journals will be available up to present, some will show a date range and some will say embargo of for example 6 months. Available titles and links to available sources are shown. Each source is listed separately. Click to continue

  15. E-journals When you select a journal title… Click on the link to go to the journal you want to view. Please note that each site will look different but will have similar features. Click to continue

  16. E-journals When you select a journal title… Most sites will open to the current issue. Similar features to look out for include ‘archive’ links or links to previous issues. In some cases when you select the full text option it may ask you to log in… look for the ‘log in via Athens’ links. Your Athens details will not work if you put them into the standard log in boxes.   17. E-journals In many cases you can also search within the journal itself for a topic, or author etc. Click to continue

  18. E-journals Viewing full text articles… Look for the ‘full text’ or ‘PDF’ links. Remember it may ask you to log in – look for the ‘log in via Athens’ links. Click to continue

  19. E-journals Viewing full text articles… Once you have opened the full text article you will notice options for either saving, printing or emailing the article. Click to continue

  20. E-books E-books can be accessed from the library webpage. As well as the link to all e-books there are links to the Oxford Handbooks and Oxford textbooks.   21. E-books You can also access the e-book collection by going to NICE Evidence Search and selecting eBooks. Remember you will need your Athens password. Click to continue

  22. E-books You can search for eBooks by title, author or keyword. You can also browse using the A-Z Links or the subject/ publisher lists. Click to continue

  23. E-books Once you have performed your search you will see a list of results like this one. You can open an eBook by clicking on ‘read book’ or by clicking on the title or image. Click to continue

  24. E-books Viewing an eBook You can navigate an eBook using the contents links, or by going to a specific page or by turning the pages in turn as you would with any book. Click to continue

  25. E-books You can also print or download pages from the book. Click to continue

  26. E-books http://oxfordmedicine.com/ You can browse the Oxford collections by Specialty, Series for example the handbooks or by career stage. Remember you will need your Athens username and password. Click to continue

  27. E-books Viewing the Oxford collections Once you have made your selection it is easy to navigate the eBook using the chapter links. Click to continue

  28. Task 1 Optional Task: The purpose of this task is to allow you to practice accessing the e-journals and full text articles. You will need your Athens username and password. Search for a journal using any of the search options. Remember you can access the journals either from the Library Webpage or from NICE Evidence Search. Navigate your way to the journal contents and select an article. Open the full text article. Click to continue

  29. Task 2 Optional Task: The purpose of this task is to allow you to practice accessing eBooks and to allow you to become more familiar with using eBooks. You will need your Athens username and password. Go to the eBooks collection and search for a book using any of the search options. Remember you can access the eBooks either from the Library Webpage or from NICE Evidence Search. Select a book and spend some time using the different navigation tools. Click to continue
