Introduction After the conclusion of ‘Paris Climate Agreement’ in 2015, India is all set to move towards cleaner and more sustainable energy future and an emission-free development path. Efforts are also required to be directed towards efficient usage of electricity. New initiatives are being planned to unleash the clean power generation capacity of India through harnessing renewable sources such as wind and solar. Around 70% of the total renewable energy generation capacity is contributed by wind energy. India is already world’s fifth largest producer of wind energy with 20 GW (gigawatts) of installed capacity. The projected target is 100 GW of wind power generation in India by 2022. This is achievable and India is ready for it.
Wind Power Generation Capacity in India India’s wind energy market has a tremendous potential and plans are being already initiated to make suitable policies and programs to harness wind energy and achieve the target of 100GW. In this respect, the biggest step is to launch National Wind Energy Mission in next couple of months. The Mission’s primary goal will be to ensure addition of 10GW of wind power generation capacity in India every year until 2022. This way, a total of 70-80GW capacity will be added to existing operational capacity of 22.5 GW to help India successfully reach the 100GW target. Government has also set-up plans to take appropriate measures to ensure efficient usage of electricity thus generated.
National Wind Energy Mission The National Wind Energy Mission will be implemented through schemes such as attracting foreign investment into wind sector and providing low-cost finance through national agencies.
Wind Power in Jath, Maharashtra Due to the continuous increase in the tariffs for wind energy projects over last 2-3 years, several leading wind energy companies from across the globe have already started investing in India’s wind market.
Critical Incentives Re-Introduced By The Ministry Of New And Renewable Energy Accelerated Depreciation wherein power developers can enjoy tax benefits by reducing their taxable income (by depreciating the value of their capital assets) during initial years of the project. Continue the Generation Based Incentives (GBI – Rs. 0.50 per Kilo-watt hour for a period of 4-10 years with a cap of Rs.10 million per MW) even after the 12th Five Year Plan.
Offshore Wind Energy Market India has initiated plans to develop offshore wind energy market to realize its potential to develop 350 GW of offshore wind energy. A 100 MW of wind energy project off the coast of Gujarat is already announced. Additionally, a 300 MW of offshore wind energy project in Gujarat is also announced by Suzlon Energy.
Low-Capacity And Aging Wind Turbines For Improved Efficiency The Ministry also has plans to repower low-capacity and aging wind turbines for improved efficiency, higher energy yield and grid integration.
Conclusion Investment is the key to have a matured and successful wind energy market. In order to increase renewable energy investments in India, it’s therefore crucial to provide strong policy support and increase financier’s confidence. The soon-to-be-launched National Wind Energy Mission is expected to work in this direction and facilitate wind power generation in India.
