  1. SHOWFLIPPER PRESENTS PERFECT PASTEL DRAWING

  2. Introduction The word “Pastel” comes from the Italian word “Pastelle”, which means paste. Pastels have high concentration of pure color pigments and lowest of binders and fillers. Colors achieved are vibrant. They are delicate and toxic and have unique properties which put them as a class of their own www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  3. Pastel Types Pastels are found in form of sticks or pans. The 4 basic varieties are – Soft Pastels Hard Pastels Pastel Pencils Oil Pastels www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  4. Pastel types Made of pigments that are mined and mixed with binders. Hard and soft pastels and pastel pencils use sap derivatives as binder. Oil pastels use binder made of oil and wax. These give them different qualities than other types, which make them incompatible to other pastel types. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  5. Soft Pastels Have a ratio of high pigment and least binder. Hence are brittle and crumble easily. Are wrapped in paper. Difficult to use and learn with for beginners. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  6. Hard Pastels Have less pigment and are less delicate. Easier to use and learn with for beginners. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  7. Pastel Pencils Are exactly like pencils. Instead of graphite, pastel medium is used to fill the wood wrap. The medium has a consistency of between a hard and soft pastel stick. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  8. Pros of Pastels Give the closest possible color to pure pigment. Sketching can be done with soft pastels with precision. Soft pastels are used to create large details with max effect. Hard pastels are used to create finer details. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  9. Pros of Pastels Easy to transport and easy to clean. Come in easy to carry. Plein painting is very easy to do. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  10. Cons of Pastels Highly toxic and made of dust that is harmful for lungs and skin. Very limited variety of non-toxic pastels. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  11. Techniques to use Pastels Challenges of using pastels – Can be used only on abrasive surfaces like paper, canvas, burlap. Color cannot be mixed and tested ahead of time. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  12. Dry Washing This technique smoothes the color. Paper towel, cotton ball, fingers can be used to rub it gently to spread color evenly. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  13. Colored Ground For pastels, a pre colored surface can be used. Reduces vibrancy of the pastel. The hard side of pastel can be used to cover the entire surface and dry washed for a colored ground effect. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  14. Erasing Pastels are difficult to paint over and hence have limited options to correct a mistake. A kneaded eraser gently removes the pigment from the surface. The eraser, lifts the pigment particles off the surface. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  15. Blurring Pastels are good for creating blurring effects in a drawing or a painting. Gentle rubbing with a cotton ball or paper towel, pastel color can be blurred to bring other colors in focus. This technique is also called feathering or “Sfumato”. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  16. Textured Surfaces and Rubbing Pastels work well with a technique called “Frottage”. It is a technique where a surface is rubbed with medium place over a rough surface. Alternative to the technique is by using a textured surface that is folded like a collage or paper, that affect the pattern created by pastels. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  17. Resisting In painting, resist means to cover an area of surface to resist any color. Pastels are good with this technique. Abrasion in spots can be eliminated, or other medium can be added. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  18. Making Pastels Pastels are simple medium which can be made at home. There are many varieties of pigments and binders. Many pigments for making specific colors have to be ordered from exotic suppliers. Pigments are toxic and made of fine particles. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel

  19. Making Pastels Process is highly specific and not child friendly. Home made pastels are great alternative to high quality products for saving costs. Process is simple – mix pigment dust with sap until it has a dough consistency. Let is harden and you have made a soft pastel. www.showflipper.com | Company Presentation | Pastel
