Write a quick story that is inspired by the music. • At the end of your story, switch your story with another classmate and then write at least a 5 sentence paragraph that answers this question on the story that you got from the other person: • What is the overall tone the author has toward his subject. Make sure to use embedded quotes and evidence from your story to prove your assertion.

  11. Author’s purpose: Lord of the Flies • As all authors use their life and times as reference points in their works, Golding drew heavily on the social-religious-cultural-military ethos of his times. The island and the boys and many other objects and events in the work represent Golding's view of the world and humankind in general. Golding spent two years as a science student at Oxford University before he aborted his pursuit of science for a degree in English literature, his first step toward a rejection of the science. When World War II began, Golding was involved in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. After his military experience, Golding was a schoolteacher. Three things Golding wanted to get across: (1) The desire for social and political order through parliaments, governments, and (2) The natural inclination toward evil and violence (3) The belief in supernatural or divine intervention.

  12. Author’s purpose:Brave New World • Raised in this family of scientists, writers, and teachers (his father was a writer and teacher, and his mother a schoolmistress), Huxley received an excellent education, first at home, then at Eton, providing him with access to numerous fields of knowledge. • Much of his work deals with the conflict between the interests of the individual and society, often focusing on the problem of self-realization within the context of social responsibility. • Through its exploration of the pitfalls of linking science, technology, and politics, and its argument that such a link will likely reduce human individuality. • Huxley anticipated all of these developments. Hitler came to power in Germany a year after the publication of Brave New World. World War II broke out six years after. The atomic bomb was dropped thirteen years after its publication

Diction, connotation, mood, tone, author’s purpose • Read chapter 1 • On a lined piece of paper from your reading section of your notebook, label the paper as the title of the book and the heading above.
