Vocabulary and Description for BRVOBranch Retinal Vein Occlusion • Veins take blood away from the eye • Retina is the back of the eye • Occlusion is a blockage • Branch is an area where a vein divides into two paths A BRVO happens when a vein becomes blocked and bleeds into the retina. It is the second most common disease that causes vision loss. Most BRVO’s happen after age 50. To prevent BRVO eat a healthy diet, exercise, don’t smoke, and maintain a healthy weight.

  3. Patient Symptoms and Health • No pain • Sudden loss of Peripheral vision • Vision is blurry • Spots are seen • Patient has high blood pressure and smokes

  4. Anatomy of Patient’s Eye • The outside of the eye appears normal • Internally there is a clot in a vein on the retina. • A clear line of bleeding is seen along the retinal vein. • Some hardening of the arteries is also visible

  5. Health Reasons that May Cause BRVO • High Blood Pressure • Heart Problems • Aging • Smoking • Diabetes

  6. Treatment and Prognosis Treatments: Steroid injections Laser treatment to stop the bleeding To prevent BRVO eat a healthy diet, exercise, don’t smoke, and maintain a healthy weight. Prognosis: More than 60% of the patients will have 20/40 vision if the laser treatment is used and diagnosis is early. Most people will still have some blurred or spots in their vision.
