Road to the civil war. By: D’Andrea France . The Dred scott case. Dred scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He argued that having once living in a free state he was not a slave. Scott could not file a lawsuit because African Americans were not citizens.

The Dred scott case • Dred scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. • He argued that having once living in a free state he was not a slave. • Scott could not file a lawsuit because African Americans were not citizens. • the constitution protects a citizens right to own property. Slaves considered property could be taken anywhere by owners. • The U.S congress had no right to outlaw slavery in a territory. There for the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. • *it was important because it anger the northerners.

Lincoln and Douglas debate • Douglas, was a democrat he wanted to run for president but first he had to be re-elected to represent Illinois in the senate • The republicans chose Abraham Lincoln to run against Douglas in the senate race • Lincoln wasn’t as well known as Douglas • Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of public debates in different Illinois locations from august though October 1858 • Douglas won the seat n senate but Lincoln gained a national reputation some republican began t think of Lincoln as a presidential candidate

  4. Lincoln elected president • Abraham only received 40% of the popular vote. • However he won the majority of electoral collage vote which won him the election • Lincoln won ever free states vote expect new jersey which was split between him and Douglas

South Carolina secedes • When news of Lincolns election reached south Carolina the legislature called for a state convention to discuss leaving the union. • They met in Charleston on December 20, 1860 • The delegates voted that the union now subsisting between south Carolina and other states was ended • The union is the northern states the is the states that seceded
