  3. Jesus’ teachings

  4. The parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-9) A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.  When anyone hears the message about the Kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.  The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

  5. The parable of the sower (conti.) Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. The one who received the seed that fell among the horns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop --- a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

  6. Parable of the Sower Lessons to be Learned We must be the right kind of hearers Seed has no power until it is sown Jesus wants all people to be exposed to the gospel We must not allow influences to harden us to truth We must resist Satan We must avoid impulsiveness and act with sober deliberation

  7. What kind of “hearer”are you? • “the wayside” • “the stony” • “among the thorns” • “the good soil”

  8. The parable of the lost sheep What do you think?  If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray?  13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14  So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

  9. The parable of the lost son(Luke 15)

  10. The parable of the lost son Context [1] Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him [Jesus]. [2] And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." [3] So he told them this parable . . .

  11. The younger son • In Jewish society, there were laws regarding how inheritances were typically divided. The oldest brother got a double share (cf. Deut. 21:17), while the other brothers got a single share. When there were two brothers (as here), the older brother would get 2/3rds of the estate, and the younger brother would get 1/3rd. • “Father, give me my share of the estate”. • “set off a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.”

  12. The younger son • (a) "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you" (v. 18), • (b) "I am no longer worthy to be called your son" (v. 19a), • (c) "treat me as one of your hired servants" (v. 19b).

  13. The father • “Bring the best robe and put it on him”, because "This my son was dead, and is alive again" and "He was lost, and is found." • This shows us God's reaction when we return from being lost in sin. He doesn't begrudge us what we have done. He doesn't take us back reluctantly. Like the father in the parable, he takes us back joyously!Eagerly! • But this is not all there is to the story ....

  14. The older brother • The older brother became angry and refused to go in. “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders” • The older brother sees the difference in treatment as a manifest injustice toward him and is angry with his father because of it. • “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.”

  15. Lessons to be learned • We can be a genuine son of the Father--who is spiritually "alive"--and be "lost" through sin. We can turn our backs on our heavenly Father and leave him of our own free will. • Sin inevitably lands us in a far worse state than we were in originally. We can, however, return to the Father and be accepted by him with great joy. In fact, he is ready and eager to accept us back and forgive us, no matter what we've done. • Christians who have never fallen should not resent those who come back. They should share in their Father's joy. Their own place is secure and their heavenly reward is not threatened. God loves them just as much as he loves those who come back through a dramatic conversion.

  16. Love your enemies “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Luke, 6:27-29) “If you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that.” (Luke, 6:33)

  17. Do not worry “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” “Don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough of its own”

  18. Ask, Seek, Knock “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” “你们祈求就给你们,寻找就寻见,叩门就给你们开门。” “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” “我站在门外叩门;若有听见我声音就开门的,我要进到他那里去,我与他,他与我一同坐席。”

  19. The parable of the weeds “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. 27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ 28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ 29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” Those opposed to Jesus The followers of Jesus Satan Judgment Day Hell Heaven

  20. The second coming of Jesus Christ—Judgment Day “Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” Luke (24:50-51).“And behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book” Rev 22:7. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Rev (22:20). "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.“ "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect" (Matthew 24:44).

  21. “Judging the living and the dead” • For the living: “Those who remain loyal to God will have passed the test that Adam and Eve failed. They will be judged worthy of receiving everlasting life in the restored Paradise earth. Those who choose to rebel against God will be permanently destroyed, as will Satan and the demons”. For the dead: “the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

  22. What will be the Hell like?

  23. What will be the Heaven like? A river, clear as crystal, will flow from the throne of God and of the Lamb [Jesus] down the middle of the city. On each side of the river there will be a tree of life, yielding twelve kinds of fruit every month. The streets will be pure gold, like transparent glass. The walls of the city will be adorned with every kind of jewel, emerald, etc. There will be no need for a sun or moon, and no need for a temple or church. The presence of the Lord will be its light.2 (Revelation 21-22)

  24. Trinity

  25. Trinity • Egg: shell/White/yolk • Apple: skin/core/pulp • Water: ice/steam/liquid • Man: worker/husband/father

  26. Trinity • The word "trinity" is a term used to denote the Christian doctrine that God exists as a unity of three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  • Each of the persons is distinct from the other, yet identical in essence.  In other words, each is fully divine in nature, but each is not the totality of the other persons of the Trinity.  Each has a will, loves, and says "I" and "You" when speaking.  The Father is not the same person as the Son, who is not the same person as the Holy Spirit, who is not the same person as the Father.   • Each is divine, yet there are not three gods, but one God.
