Drugs. Drug Definitions. Drug -any substance that causes a change in a person’s physical or psychological state. Medicine -any drug used to cure, prevent, or treat illness or discomfort. Prescription -written order from doctors for a specific medicine.

  2. Drug Definitions • Drug-any substance that causes a change in a person’s physical or psychological state. • Medicine-any drug used to cure, prevent, or treat illness or discomfort

  3. Prescription-written order from doctors for a specific medicine. • Over-the-counter-OTC-a drug bought over the counter; without a doctor’s prescription.

  4. Effects-intended effects of a drug • Side Effect-any effect caused by a drug that is different than the intended effect.

  5. Activeingredients-chemical component that gives a medicine it’s action. • Inactiveingredients-fillers that give pills their size, shape, color, coating; color and flavor to liquids.

  6. Drug Use Using medicine properly • Right drug • Right amount • Right time • Right person • Right reason

  7. Drug Misuse Using a drug for the right reason but the wrong ways • Wrong amount • Wrong frequency • Wrong strength • Wrong manner

  8. Drug Abuse • Using a drug for the wrong reason • Take a drug other than it’s intended purpose • Any illegal drug • A drug that will damage a person’s ability to function

  9. FDA- Food and Drug Administration • Withdrawal-uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms when a drug is removed. Symptoms are usually opposite of the drug effect.

  10. How Drugs enter your Body • Implanted pumps • Inhalation • Injection • Transdermal patches • Ingestion • Topical application

  11. Choosing an OTC Medicine • Decide what will work for you • Generic or brand name (“Publix” brand vs “Advil”) • Read the label
