  2. Induced v. Spontaneous Abortions • Induced abortions occur when intentional actions are taken to terminate the fetus. • Spontaneous abortions (also known as miscarriages) occur when the fetus is terminated due to accidental causes.

  3. Morning-after Pill • The chemical compound that prevents the blastocyst from embedding in the uterine wall, causing the fertilized egg to be expelled by making the uterine wall inhospitable.

  4. RU 486 (mifepristone) • A drug that induces uterine contractions and expulsion of the embryo. (first 7 weeks).

  5. Uterine and Vacuum Aspiration • The cervix is dilated and the uterine contents are removed by suction tube.

  6. Dilation and Curettage (D&C) • The cervix is dilated and the uterus is scraped with a spoon-shaped curette. This method is performed later in the pregnancy and requires the fetus be dismembered and then removed.

  7. Saline solution • A solution of salt and water is used to replace the amniotic fluid and thus causes a miscarriage.

  8. Prostaglandin Drugs • Induce early labor

  9. Hysterotomy Similar to a cesarean section, used in later-term abortions.

  10. Dilation and Extraction (D&X) • Partial birth abortions • 2nd or 3rd trimester procedure. • Forceps are used to deliver the torso of the fetus, its skull is punctured and the cranial contents suctioned out, and then delivery is completed.
