  2. Extending Life Julie Jones Micro Air Vehicle Sr. Design Team MicroTurbine Sr. Design Team Pacemaker What do Mechanical Engineers do? Everything ! • Engineers are involved in every product you use, all of the food that you eat, all of the clothes that you wear, and all of the buildings that you live in. • Aerospace – Land on the moon, Explore Mars, Send your creation to another solar system! • Transportation –Planes, Trains, and Automobiles! • BioEngineering – Pacemakers, Ultrasound, Dental Drills, Imaging Systems, Treatment Technologies • Electronic Devices – TVs, MP3 Players, Cell Phones, Computers – You name it! • WE TURN IDEAS INTO REALITY! Medical Diagnostic Lasers Sr. Design Team High Efficiency Vehicle Sr. Design Team

  3. Why do We Need Mechanical Engineers? Vehicle Systems Aerospace and Defense Computing and Communications Technology Environmental Control Systems Consumer Products Industrial Products Appliances B&L Eyecare Products

  4. Where do Mechanical Engineers Work? All over the World ! In the Field In Offices Germany In Factories In Space! Wherever Needed France Australia

  5. Co-Op Info for Mech. Engineers • Ms. Carolina Cizmar and Ms. Lisa Monette are the co-op coordinators for all Mech. Eng. students. • 269 Placements for Mech. Eng. students this Summer • 123 Placements for Mech. Eng. students in Fall 05-1 • Most jobs are in New York state and nearby areas. However, there are opportunities nationally and internationally. • Wages for most students on their first or second co-op period fall between $8.00 and $13.00 per hour; this increases in later co-ops. • Fall Quarter Range: Low: $9.00/hr Average: $15.09/hr High: $23.25/hr • Students should be flexible in looking for positions away from Rochester and away from home! • The Co-op office helps M.E. Students with • Group and individual job search assistance • Arranges for employers to visit RIT campus • Lists available co-op and full time positions • Access to a library of job search resources • Orientation Sessions

  17. M.E.s Work Well in Teams and Individually M.E.s work with teams of other professionals (other engineering disciplines, science, business, political professionals) and skilled labor. An M.E. is often looked to as the General Practitioner of the engineering disciplines Mechanical Engineers do equally well in small firms (the only engineer around) and in large corporations (focused expertise for the problem at hand).

  18. Is Mechanical Engineering Right for You? Are you Creative? Are you willing to work hard to achieve your goals? Do YOU want to make the world a better place? Are you talented at science and math? Do you get joy from turning your ideas into reality?

  19. Questions??? Mechanical Engineering - We Design the Future!

  20. Summary • Mechanical Engineering is • Exciting • Challenging • Rewarding • We’re pleased to have you here at RIT with us. • If this sounds like the right program for you, come see me. Mechanical Engineering - We Design the Future!
