  1. The Sabbath Day Does God require Christians to observe the Sabbath day?

  2. Introduction • Many Jews today, according to their traditions, keep the Sabbath, worshipping and resting on the seventh day of the week, Saturday • Even some so-called Christian groups such as Seventh-day Adventists also claim to observe the Sabbath today as God’s required day of worship

  3. Introduction • They insist all Christians must observe the Sabbath, seventh day of rest, today in order to please God • Why do they believe this teaching? • Why do we reject their teaching and worship on Sunday, the first day of the week? • May we all humbly and reverently search the Scriptures together

  4. No Evidence Of Anyone Keeping The Sabbath Before God Spoke To Israel • Common misleading teaching is the Sabbath, rest on the 7th day of week, was universally commanded by God from the beginning • Truth – Moses speaks of what God did after 6 days of Creation, He rested on 7th day • Nothing revealed about what humanity should do to observe the Sabbath

  5. No Evidence Of Anyone Keeping The Sabbath Before God Spoke To Israel • Nothing revealed about penalties for not observing Sabbath • First mention of God commanding humanity regarding Sabbath was to Israel after the exodus • No evidence that anyone before Exodus 16 ever observed the Sabbath in any way

  6. After Creation, God rests On The Seventh Day • Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. • Gen 2:2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. • Gen 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

  7. God First Gave Sabbath Commandment To Israel • Exo 16:22 Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, • Exo 16:23 then he said to them, "This is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning."

  8. The Sabbath, Part Of The Law Of Moses, Old Covenant, Given Only To Israel • Law of Moses, including the Sabbath, given to Israel only at Mount Sinai • The Sabbath was a sign of the covenant God had made with Israel • Violators of the Sabbath were to be put to death • The Sabbath was also to remind Israel that God had rescued them from Egyptian slavery

  9. Sabbath, Part of Law of Moses, Given To Israel Only • Exo 20:8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. • Exo 20:9 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, • Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

  10. Sabbath, Part of Law of Moses, Given To Israel Only • Exo 20:11 "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

  11. Sabbath, Part of Law of Moses, Given To Israel Only • Neh 9:13 "Then You came down on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven; You gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments. • Neh 9:14 "So You made known to them Your holy sabbath, And laid down for them commandments, statutes and law, Through Your servant Moses.

  12. The Sabbath A Sign of God’s Covenant With Israel • Exo 31:12 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, • Exo 31:13 "But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

  13. The Sabbath A Sign of God’s Covenant With Israel • Exo 31:14 'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. • Exo 31:15 'For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

  14. The Sabbath A Sign of God’s Covenant With Israel • Exo 31:16 'So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.' • Exo 31:17 "It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed."

  15. Death Was The Penalty For Violating The Sabbath • Exo 31:14 'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you.

  16. The Sabbath A Reminder To Israel of Their Rescue From Slavery • Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I am speaking today in your hearing, that you may learn them and observe them carefully. • Deu 5:2 "The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. • Deu 5:3 "The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today.

  17. The Sabbath A Reminder To Israel of Their Rescue From Slavery • Deu 5:12 'Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. • Deu 5:13 'Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  18. The Sabbath A Reminder To Israel of Their Rescue From Slavery • Deu 5:14 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

  19. The Sabbath A Reminder To Israel of Their Rescue From Slavery • Deu 5:15 'You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

  20. Jesus Kept The Sabbath Because He Lived Under The Law Of Moses • Many will say we should keep the Sabbath today as Jesus did • Jesus kept not only the Sabbath but all the Law of Moses without sin • He also commanded others to keep the Law of Moses • But, His apostles nowhere command Christians to keep the Sabbath or the Law of Moses

  21. Jesus Lived Under The Law of Moses • Gal 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, • Gal 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

  22. Jesus Perfectly Kept The Law of Moses Including The Sabbath • 1Pe 2:22 WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; • Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

  23. While On Earth, Jesus Commanded Other Jews To Keep The Law of Moses • Mar 1:41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and *said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." • Mar 1:42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

  24. While On Earth, Jesus Commanded Other Jews To Keep The Law of Moses • Mar 1:43 And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, • Mar 1:44 and He *said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

  25. The Sabbath Day • No evidence of anyone keeping the Sabbath before God spoke to Israel • The Sabbath, part of the Law of Moses, old covenant, given only to Israel • Jesus kept the Sabbath because He lived under the Law of Moses • Jesus ended the Law of Moses including the Sabbath and established His new covenant

  26. Jesus Ended The Law Of Moses Including The Sabbath And Established His New Covenant • In His death, after living a sinless life on earth, Jesus fulfilled and ended the old covenant • In His blood, perfect sacrifice, He established the new covenant by which both Jews and Gentiles must be saved • The old covenant including the Sabbath was intended to be temporary, replaced by the gospel

  27. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Col 2:13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, • Col 2:14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

  28. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Col 2:15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. • Col 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day--

  29. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Col 2:17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

  30. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Rom 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. • Rom 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

  31. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Rom 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

  32. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. • Eph 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,

  33. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Eph 2:15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, • Eph 2:16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

  34. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Heb 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. • Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.

  35. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, He says, "BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH;

  36. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Heb 8:9 NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT; FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, AND I DID NOT CARE FOR THEM, SAYS THE LORD.

  37. In Jesus’ Death, He Ended Old Covenant and Established New Covenant • Heb 8:13 When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

  38. Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and Law of Moses All Temporary • Exo 31:16 'So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.' • Gen 17:9 God said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.

  39. Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and Law of Moses All Temporary • Gen 17:10 "This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. • Exo 40:15 and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father, that they may minister as priests to Me; and their anointing will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations."

  40. Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and Law of Moses All Temporary • Gal 3:19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. • Gal 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. • Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

  41. Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and Law of Moses All Temporary • Gal 5:3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. • Gal 5:4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

  42. No Positive New Testament Authority For Christians To Observe The Sabbath • As Christians, we are concerned with having Divine authority for whatever we do in serving Christ • Authority expressed in commands, promises, apostolic approved examples and necessary conclusions

  43. No Positive New Testament Authority For Christians To Observe The Sabbath • 9 of the 10 Commandments repeated in New Testament • Observing the Sabbath Day is nowhere mentioned in the New Testament • Divine authority informs us that Christians met and worshipped on the first day of the week

  44. Must Have Divine Authority For All We Do In Serving Christ • Mat 21:25 "The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?' • Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

  45. Some of The 9 of 10 Commandments Repeated In New Covenant • Rom 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. • Rom 13:9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

  46. Some of The 9 of 10 Commandments Repeated In New Covenant • Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

  47. Divine Authority For Christians To Worship On First Day of The Week • Act 20:7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.

  48. Divine Authority For Christians To Worship On First Day of The Week • 1Co 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. • 1Co 16:2 On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.

  49. The Christian Sabbath Is In Heaven • Gal 4:10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. • Gal 4:11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.

  50. The Christian Sabbath Is In Heaven • Heb 4:6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, • Heb 4:7 He again fixes a certain day, "Today," saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS."
