  1. Sharon Shahan Summative GLISI Essay

  2. I believe that…… • My L-5 classes have created a better understanding of the role of an educational leader • The internship activities have helped me realize the amount of time and energy an educational leader will have to devote to their job • The overall experience has helped convince me of the type of leadership job I would like to have

  3. DATA ANALYSIS LEADER • I believe that….. • This was NOT my strength • This task is tedious, detail oriented and logistically complicated • Realized that this job normally goes to the newest member of the leadership team

  4. DATA ANALYSIS LEADER continued • Greg Fowler helped me realize that even though not a strength it is imperative to understand • FTE funding tied to this GLISI role • AYP tied to this role • My main intern activity with this role was analyzing the WorkKeys testing data • Plan to ask for more duties in order to become more comfortable with this task.

  5. CURRICULUM, ASSESSMENT, INSTRUCTION LEADER • I believe that….. • This is a strength for me • It involves building relationships • It involves getting “buy-in” from your staff as to the plans and focus for the school or the system

  6. CURRICULUM, ASSESSMENT, INSTRUCTION LEADER continued • Nancy Strawbridge classes taught me that a principal MUST be the instructional leader of a school • Linda Sevigney taught the importance of a principal understanding and being involved with curriculum adoption • My intern activity included mentoring a new teacher • Rewarding building that relationship • Give and take with new and practiced ideas

  7. PERFORMANCE LEADER • I believe that……. • This role is challenging • Professor Claxton informed us that getting “buy-in” from your staff is a vital role of a school leader • In order for a school to perform at the desired level a focused vision has to be adopted and accepted by everyone

  8. PERFORMANCE LEADER continued • My intern activity included being a leader for tactic 4 on our strategic plan • Difficult to get people to “buy-in” to a plan they inherited • Difficult to get team members to focus on preparing for the SACS visit • Difficult to get uninterested members to comply with requirements for documentation

  9. OPERATIONS LEADER • I believe that…… • This is another of my strengths • Organization, vision and planning are a vital role with this task • Professor Claxton made it clear that budgeting and planning can make or break a school or a district

  10. OPERATIONS LEADER continued • This role allowed me to organize our DECA region competition • Disseminating information, collecting money, organizing participants, analyzing results • Assisted with the organization of our DECA state competition • Plan and teachers reception • Tallied and analyzed competitors results to determine winners • Assisted with the organization of our DECA International competition held in Atlanta • Planned an administrators luncheon • Developed contingency plans after the tornado hit two weeks prior to competition

  11. RELATIONSHIP LEADER • I believe that….. • This was my favorite GLISI role • All of my classes pointed out that in order for a principal or a leader to be effective, they must be able to build and maintain relationships with all sorts of personalities • Public education has many stakeholders and a leader needs to be able to interact with them all • It was also pointed out, sadly, that politics plays an important role in building and maintaining relationships and alliances, a leader needs to be adept at this role

  12. RELATIONSHIP LEADER continued • My intern activity had me act as a recruiter for students and professional members • I was able to go into the community, meet with professionals and build relationships • This allowed us to grow our advisory council and create partnerships with local businesses • I recruited at the three home schools in order to increase student enrollment at RCA for the next school year • This role allowed me to build relationships with students and allow them to understand the benefits of RCA

  13. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT LEADER • I believe that…… • This is a difficult role for a leader • It is similar to data analysis leader • Requires a logical, detail oriented person • Includes things such as planning a master schedule • Deciding which classes to continue or drop • Verifying FTE and AYP information

  14. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT LEADER continued • Greg Fowler and Professor Claxton made it clear that this role should be important to any leader, even if they are not good at it • My intern activity had me assist with planning the master schedule for the 08-09 school year (after the county decided to adopt an 8 period day at the last moment) • The process was tedious and mired in minutia • Understand the importance, but do not enjoy

  15. CHANGE LEADER • I believe that…… • This role can be challenging and difficult • The presentation of change does not usually go over well • Nancy Strawbridge’s class pointed out the importance of the implementation dip and how not to give up during that period • She also pointed out the way a leader presents the change will have a great impact on how the change is accepted

  16. CHANGE LEADER continued • My intern activity gave me the chance to be involved with the new Marketing GPS roll out • I found first hand how the presentation of a change message will not go over well when the audience has had no “buy-in” • I understand that with the constant barrage of new programs, requirements, tests and policies that a leader must become adept at this role in order to cut down on the discontent of their staff

  17. LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT LEADER • I believe that…… • This was a really interesting role to me • Our classes pointed out that every leader must be up to date on what is going on in the educational system • Leaders must know the relevant theories and leaders in each area • Leaders must be able to discern what practices will lead to the improvement of their school, county and student learning

  18. LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT LEADER continued • My intern activity allowed me to become a member of the RCA leadership team • Interesting to see how decisions are discussed and made at this level • Belief of our leadership team that their job is to develop leaders throughout the school in order to improve learning and develop new ideas for the school

  19. CONCLUSION • This cohort and all its areas have been essential in developing my understanding of the true roles of a leader • It has helped focus my attention on my strengths and weaknesses as a potential leader • This experience has helped me realize that I would like to go into a leadership position in the Career Tech arena and not as a building leader • I do not believe I would have realized this without the experience of this cohort
