  1. Managing Writing Demands in CCGPS ELA First District RESA February 2014

  2. What was that again? The following ideas or principles are from our first session. If you were here last time, share with your tablemates the meaning or importance of each. If possible, share your use of the session content in your classroom. • Assigning is not teaching. Often less is more. • Direct instruction is the meat and potatoes of skill instruction. • View each unit as grand prewriting sequence. • Many strategies are helpful in more efficiently grading and responding to student writing.

  3. Learning Targets • Diagnose weaknesses in student writing • Prioritize instructional targets to mitigate weaknesses • Scaffold writing tasks to increase student success

  4. Identifying Group and Individual Needs in Writing Instruction • Read the set of papers to identify strengths and weaknesses. Use the rubric to focus your thinking and to frame written comments for each paper. Use sticky notes to attach comments to each paper. • After reading all papers, identify the instructional issues to be addressed in class, listing them from highest to lowest priority.

  5. Scaffolding Writing Tasks • Examine the scaffolding activities that were created by a teacher at South Effingham County High School, Mrs. Britany Burrell. What did she do to help students prepare for the unit writing tasks in her tenth grade ELA class?

  6. Your turn! • Choose an upcoming unit writing task. Create a scaffolding procedure to use with students who need support. Be ready to share.

  7. Looking Ahead… • Review your current or upcoming unit of instruction. Using what you know about your students’ writing skills, adjust the unit activities to reflect student needs. Identify instructional targets for each day/week.
