  1. VolcanicLandforms (pages217–223)

  2. Students will be able to… List the landforms that lava and ash create. Explain how the magma that hardens beneath the earth’s surface creates landforms. Identify other distinct features that occur in volcanic areas.

  3. LandformsFromLavaandAsh (pages218–220)1. List the landforms that lava and ash create.

  4. Key Concept:Volcanic eruptions create landforms made of lava,ash,and other materials.Theselandformsinclude shield volcanoes,cinder conevolcanoes,composite volcanoes,and lava plateaus.

  5. Ashield volcanois a gently sloping mountain. It formswhen a volcano erupts quietly.Thin layers of lava build up slowlyover a large area around the vent.

  6. Acinder coneis a steep, cone-shaped hill or smallmountain. It forms when a volcano erupts explosively. Ashes, cinders, and bombs pile up around the vent.

  7. Acomposite volcanois a tall, cone-shaped mountain. It forms when a volcano erupts quietly and thenexplosively, over and over again.Layers of lava are followedbylayers of ash, cinders, and bombs.

  8. Sometimes lavaforms a plateau instead of a mountain.A lava plateau is a high, level area.It forms when thinlavaflows out of many long cracks.

  9. If a magma chamber empties, a volcano can collapse. This leavesa hugehole calledacaldera. A calderamay fill with water and form a lake.

  10. Answer the following questions.

  11. If a volcano collapses, it leaves a huge hole called a(an) caldera

  12. Cinder cone Shield Volcano Composite Volcano

  13. Circle the letter of the choice that describes how a lava plateau forms. a. Thick lava erupts from a central vent. b. Thin lava flows out of many long cracks. c. Thick lava erupts from a caldera.

  14. Landforms From Magma(pages 221–222)2. Explain how the magma that hardens beneath the earth’s surface creates landforms.

  15. Key Concept: Features formed by magma include volcanic necks, dikes, and sills, as well as batholiths and dome mountains.

  16. A volcanic neck forms when magma hardens in the pipe of a volcano. Softer rock around the pipe wears away, leaving just the neck standing. A volcanic neck looks like a giant tooth stuck in the ground.

  17. A dike forms when magma hardens across rock layers. A dike is a vertical, or up-and-down, layer of hardened magma.

  18. A sill forms when magma hardens between rock layers. A sill is a horizontal, or sideways, layer of hardened magma.

  19. A batholith forms when a large amount of magma hardens inside the crust. A batholith is a large rock mass. It may become part of a mountain range.

  20. A dome mountain forms when a batholith or smaller chunk of hardened magma is pushed up to the surface. The hardened magma forces the layers of rock above it to bend upward into a dome shape.

  21. Answer the following questions

  22. A volcanic neck forms when magma hardens in a volcano’s pipe

  23. Circle the letter of each sentence that is true about batholiths. a. Batholiths form on the surface. b. Batholiths are large masses of rock. c. Batholiths may form dome mountains.

  24. Dike Sill

  25. GeothermalActivity(pages222–223)3. Identify other distinct features that occur in volcanic areas.

  26. Key Concept:Hot springs and geysers are types ofgeothermal activity that are often found in areas ofpresent or past volcanicactivity.

  27. Magma below the surface can heat undergroundwater. The heating of undergroundwaterby magma is calledgeothermal activity.Geothermal activity is common where there are volcanoes.

  28. A hot spring forms when water heated by magma risesto the surface and collects in a natural pool.

  29. A geyserforms when hotwater and steamaretrappedundergroundinanarrowcrack.Pressurebuildsup until the hot water and steam erupt from the ground. This happens over and over again.Old Faithful is ageyser inYellowstone National Park.It erupts about once an hour.

  30. Geysers!!

  31. Hot water from underground can be piped into homesto heat them. This is howmany people in Iceland heattheir homes. Hamburg Water House

  32. Steam from underground can be piped into electricpowerplants.Inthepowerplants, theheatenergyinthesteam is turned into electric energy.

  33. Answer the following

  34. In geothermal activity, what heats underground water? a. lava b. steam c. Magma

  35. Geyser

  36. true or false?Undergroundwater and steam can be used for energy. true

  37. 1. List the landforms that lava and ash create. 2. Explain how the magma that hardens beneath the earth’s surface creates landforms. 3. Identify other distinct features that occur in volcanic areas.
