  3. The Doctrine of Baptisms Common View: “It will be observed that the plural form is used here – baptisms. There aretwo baptismswhose necessity is taught by the Christian religion – baptism bywater, and by theHoly Ghost: the first of which is an emblem of the second.” (Albert Barnes, Notes on the New Testament, Hebrews, 126) BUT:Acts 8:12-17– Water baptism wasbeforethey received the Holy Spirit! 3

Baptism • Baptize(baptizo): “dip, submerge, immerse” “…used among the Greeks to signify the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by dipping a vessel into another…” (Vine) • Requires “much water” – Jno. 3:23 • A burial – Col. 2:12 • Going down into & coming up out of water – Acts 8:38-39 4

  7. Which baptism shall we choose? • Moses? • John? • Holy Spirit? • Fire? • Suffering? • For the dead? • In the name of the Lord Jesus? • Two is ONE too many! • None is ONE too few! • ONE is just right! WHICH ONE? 7

  16. The Great Commission Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Hewho believesandis baptizedwillbe saved;but he who does not believe will be condemned.(Mark 16:15-16) 16

  17. Hear – Believe - Baptized And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized. (Acts 18:8) 17

  18. Obey Jesus Now! See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. (Hebrews 12:25) 19
