The Doctrine of Baptisms “Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.   3. The Doctrine of Baptisms Common View: “It will be observed that the plural form is used here – baptisms. There aretwo baptismswhose necessity is taught by the Christian religion – baptism bywater, and by theHoly Ghost: the first of which is an emblem of the second.” (Albert Barnes, Notes on the New Testament, Hebrews, 126) BUT:Acts 8:12-17– Water baptism wasbeforethey received the Holy Spirit! 3

Baptism • Baptize(baptizo): “dip, submerge, immerse” “…used among the Greeks to signify the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by dipping a vessel into another…” (Vine) • Requires “much water” – Jno. 3:23 • A burial – Col. 2:12 • Going down into & coming up out of water – Acts 8:38-39 4

  7. Which baptism shall we choose? • Moses? • John? • Holy Spirit? • Fire? • Suffering? • For the dead? • In the name of the Lord Jesus? • Two is ONE too many! • None is ONE too few! • ONE is just right! WHICH ONE? 7

  16. The Great Commission Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Hewho believesandis baptizedwillbe saved;but he who does not believe will be condemned.(Mark 16:15-16) 16

  17. Hear – Believe - Baptized And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized. (Acts 18:8) 17

  18. Obey Jesus Now! See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. (Hebrews 12:25) 19
