  2. What is an Insect • Exoskeleton made of chitin • 3 pairs of legs (hexapod) • Two pairs of wings (exceptions) • One pair of antennae • One pair of compound eyes (ocelli may also be present)

What is taxonomy • The science of describing biological organisms based on their characteristics and grouping them accordingly • Current science relies on characteristics that are inherited from a common ancestor • So not only can we tell species A from B and C • We can also say A is more closely related to B than to C • So we get a ‘nested’ taxonomic system.
