History of The West Main Street Bridge • Steel truss bridge crossing over The Old Welland Canal; Previously a lift bridge, but is now in a fixed state. • Built between 1929-1930. • Presently the bridge carries two lanes of westbound traffic with an average annual daily traffic of 10,700 vehicles.

History of The West Main Street Bridge • Last rehabilitation of the bridge occurred in 2005 • Concrete repairs to the bridge deck, abutments and piers. • New concrete sidewalks, approach slabs, steel abutment bearings, pier and abutment expansion joints. • Removal of steel splash guards. • Below deck structural repairs. • Re-coating of structural steel 1.8 m above the roadway.

  5. Overview of The Current Project • A full bridge inspection was carried out in the fall of 2013 according to current Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM) guidelines. • The report provided rehabilitation recommendations to extend the useful life of the bridge, and to • Re-assed previous inspection reports to refine rehabilitation costs.

  6. Why is Rehabilitation Needed?

  7. BRIDGE CONDITION Common areas of deterioration include peeling of coating, light to moderate corrosion and areas section loss Areas that not have been re-coated are susceptible to deterioration caused by rain, snow and salt

  8. BRIDGE CONDITION Typical areas of section loss where the original splash guard was removed 100% section loss at some locations

  9. BRIDGE CONDITION Some areas underneath bridge need re-coating since the last project Areas of corrosion and section loss are common Concrete delamination on bridge concrete piers

  10. BRIDGE CONDITION 200 mm gap on sidewalk adjacent to structural steel Damaged structural elements due to impact Operator house to be upgraded using a suitable cladding system

  11. Rehabilitation Program • A 3-coat paint system is recommended. • Steel repairs are recommended including: • Plate repairs • Steel angle replacements • Gusset plate replacements • Lacing and batten plate replacements • Architectural repairs to the operator house are recommended
