  3. Feature Article History of Pease and Carrots We all know that peas and carrots go together, but do you know the story of Pease and carrots? For starters, Mr. Pease has brown eyes, and his hands never leave his wrists. Environmentally and health conscious, he bikes whenever possible and can be seen biking down the streets of Summit and New Providence. Having taught for 29 years and 26 of those years at Summit High School, Mr. Pease has spent approximately 90% of his teaching years in Summit, NJ. He teaches Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry, Statistics, and AP Statistics. Dedicated to his students, he holds nightly review sessions to further prepare his young disciples. Never one to waste his time, he coaches the Summit Mermen swimming team and Freshmen Boy’s Lacrosse. Mr. Pease can often be seen in his black and white/yellow uniform refereeing soccer or calling out “Get the fan favorite, the hot pretzel!” while commentating at Varsity football games.

  6. Editorial To the Editor: No one actually cares about gardening or learning about statistics on planting tomatoes for that matter. Today’s youth is more interested in matters that actually pertain to our life, like marijuana use, alcohol, or STD’s. Gardening’s too boring and time consuming for us busy seniors to deal with. We need some excitement in our life before we head off to college. - Typical Angsty Teen Flo R. Power’s Column No one ever seems to appreciate the union between statistics and gardening. It is a beautiful relationship. Understanding statistics improves the gardening experience. My understanding of statistics has helped me become a better gardener. For example, I can now better predict and assess the probability of a plant surviving. For me, gardening is calming. It is my refuge from all of the chaos in the world. I love planting my impatiens, nasturtium, snap dragon and eating my home grown fruits and vegetables. I recently planted my own coconut tree, and it was an absolute delight. I suppose it helps that I live in the south where the weather is ripe for growing palm trees! All in all, people should take the time to try this experience before judging and deriding it. Much can be learned from it.

  7. Problem of the Season Answer for Last Issue’s Question: (0.23, 0.77) This Answer in next Issue Every Monday a local grocery store gives coupons away to 50 people who correctly answer a question about the produce in the grocery store. The coupons are numbered 1 to 50, with the 1st person receiving number 1, second person number 2, etc. On the following Saturday, the grocery store randomly draws numbers from 1-50 and awards prizes in the form of produce. Numbers continue to be drawn (without replacement) until the total amount awarded first equals or exceeds 300 items of produce. Numbers 1-5 have a value of 200 items and coupons 6-20 have a value of 100 and 21-50 have a value of 50 items. Explain how you would conduct a simulation using the random number table provided below to estimate the distribution of the number of prize winners each week. Perform your simulation 3 times. Start at the leftmost digit of the first row and move across. Make your procedure clear so that someone can follow what you did. Report the number of winners in each of your 3 trials. 72749 13347 65030 26128 49067 02904 49953 74674 94617 13317 81638 36566 42709 33717 59943 12027 46547 61303 46699 76423  38449 46438 91579 01907 72146 05764 22400 94490 49833 09258

  10. Conclusion The seven of us walked into Room 101 on September 8, 2009 to take on the difficult task of learning t-statistic test, SRS, confidence intervals, chi-square test, histograms, box and whisker plots, LSRL, probability, etc. We are glad to say, we now know all of that and more. Of course, we could not have done it without our fabulous statistics teacher Mr. Pease. He always made class fun, from eating radioactive M&M’s to counting strawberry seeds. Through these past ten months, we bonded as a class, stressed about the exam countdown together, and celebrated once we finished the exam as a family. The seven of us, especially, will never forget the memories we made in this class. Mark will miss Mr. Pease’s great sense of humor; Joe will miss Jay; Conor will miss the Pease Bucks; Carey will miss the swimming references; Megan will miss the warm-ups; Greg will miss the warm-downs; and Ally will miss SPIKE. But most of all, we will miss MR. PEASE.
