  2. Was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland • December 18, 1879 - June 29, 1940 • Considered both a German and a Swiss painter. SwissGerman

Was born in a Musical Family • His Father, Hans Klee, was a German music teacher • His mother, Ida Frick, had trained to be a singer • Klee was the second of two children • He found more creativity towards art rather then music as did the rest of his family. • At sixteen his landscape drawings already showed considerable skill.

  4. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality.

  5. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included: Cubism Expressionism Surrealism

  6. 6 Interesting facts! • Klee appears to be equally talented in both music and drawing. • He was developing some experimental techniques, including drawing with a needle on a blackened pane of glass • Became associated with an art group named Der Blaue Rieter (The Blue rider) • Married a pianist

  7. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered color theory, and wrote extensively about it; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory They were called, Paul Klee Notebooks

  8. One of his last paintings, "Death and Fire", features a skull in the center with the German word for death, "Tod", appearing in the face
