Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) • AvH promotes German and foreign postdocts, international research cooperation and an active world-wide network of scholars • AvH Research Fellowships : • Humboldt Research Fellowships • Roman Herzog Research Fellowships • Return Fellowships to highly qualified scientists from all disciplines

AvH Research Fellowships resident outside Germany • The main goal: to carry out a research stay at scientific host institution in Germany • Conditions for applying: - doctorate and/or research work over several years, convincingly demonstrated by publications in internationally recognised academic journals - researcher needs to identify academic host in Germany, and agree details of research projects and schedule prior to submission of applications

Funding and duration: • Funding between €2,100 and €3,000 per month • Additionally may be covered: contribution to health insurance, travel expenses, German language course, allowances for spouses and children, conferences and travel allowances • Duration – 6 to 12 months Applications can be submitted at any time, selection takes place in March, July and November

Roman Herzog Research Fellowships • The main goal: an initiative of AvH and the non-profit Hertie Foundation to enable young highly qualified scientists and scholars to carry out research projects in Germany • Conditions for applying: - doctorate or comparable academic degree (PhD, C.Sc. Or equivalent) and/or research work over several years, proven through publications in recognised scientific journals - age limit: 35 years !!!

Funding and duration: • Monthly research fellowship rates range between €1,600 and €2,100 • Additionally may be covered: contribution to health insurance, travel expenses, German language course, allowances for spouses and children, conferences and travel allowances • Duration: between 6 and 12 months

  13. Return Fellowships for Research Fellows from CEECs (AvH and Hertie Foundation) • The main goal: To support the reintegration of research fellows after finishing their research periods in Germany, by providing financial assistance to carry out research in the home country

Conditions for applying: - applications should be submitted no earlier than 3 months before the end of the research stay and later than 6 months after completion of the research stay - return fellowship must be taken up no later than 12 months after end of the initial stay - work schedule - reference from the academic host in Germany - list of publications produced during the research stay - confirmation by the institution in the home country that a workplace will be provided

  15. Funding and duration: • Financial support of €500 per month is possible for 12 months (the total €6,000 is paid in two instalments, at the beginning and after submission of a brief interim report after 6 months) • €500 for scientific literature

Research Fellowships • Enabling young researchers: - To carry out a clearly defined research project - to acquaint themselves with new scientfic research methods - to complete a larger research project • Funding: fellowship + monthly lump sum payment to cover maintence and travel costs • Duration: up to 2 years

  22. Emmy Noether Programme • Purpose: - to enable outstanding postdocs of all disciplines to qualify for a university teaching career - to recruit outstanding postdocs from abroad (back) to Germany • Project requirements: - excellent qualifications - excellent research project

International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) • For Doctoral students • To prepare outstanding doctoral students from Germany and abroad for a doctoral degree in cooperation with foreign and domestic universities at selected locations; excellent research conditions; teaching language is English • Fellowships for doctoral students: from 975 € to 1.128 € • 2 years with a possible 1-year extension; applications may be submitted directly to one of the 38 IMPRS at any time

Visegrad Scholarship Programme The VSP is a specific programme of the International Visegrad Fund created for the purpose of facilitating academic exchanges by providing financial support for applicant who are citizens of the States of Contracing Parties and for foreign citizens to study in the Member States of Contracting Parties.

  35. Types of Scholarships 1. Intra-Visegrad scholarship: for outstanding master degree holder under 35 years age limit within the territory of member States 2. Out-going scholarship: for outstanding master degree holder 35 years age limit from Member States for studies at acknowledged universities worldwide

Amounts for the VSP scholarships • Intra-Visegrad Scholarship: - 4.000 € for student - 3.000 € for university (as a lump sum) • Out-going Scholarship: - 15.000 € per country, distributed up to priorities of respective Ministry of Education • In-coming Scholarship: - 5.000 € for student - 3.000 € for university (as a lump sum)

  44. British Council The aim of „Young Scientists Programme” is to support joint scientific research and in particular to provide young scientists from Poland and other countries – and the UK with enhanced study and research opportunities.

  45. General information • Prospective participants can make one or more research visits to partner institutions in the UK • Applications can be in any area of pure or applied sciences • Application from young researchers („young” – researchers who are in the early stages of their career) can be considered • Applicants should be PhD students or researchers who have completed their PhD within 5 years previous to the submission date.

  46. Financial support • Grants are offered as contributions towards travel and living costs only. • Grants are NOT provided for studentships or for conference attendance.

  47. Assessment criteria Based on 5 criteria: • The completeness of the information provided in the proposal • The coherence and strenght of the research plan and proposal for publication • The potential quality of the reserach presented in the project • The strenght of support from the home and receiving institutions • The overall potential of the project to advance the applicant’s research career.
