  1. “The Tell-Tale Heart” Vocabulary Study

  2. Directions • On each slide, you will find a vocabulary word from the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart.” • Each slide will give you a definition and a sentence example for the word. • On your vocabulary handout, write the definition for each word and create a sentence of your own that uses the word.

  3. Foresight • To think about the future. • To prepare for the future. • Thinking about and planning ahead of time. I am glad I had the foresight to pack an umbrella since it rained the entire time I was at the football game.

  4. Dissimulation • Hidden by a fake appearance. • Disguise your intentions. The dissimulation of his fighting style caught me off guard during the wrestling match.

  5. Vexed • Troubled, annoyed, frustrated, distressed My little brother’s annoying behavior at the movies vexed me.

  6. Sagacity • Good judgment • Make good decisions Jesse showed great sagacity by deciding to study a little each night of the week instead of only studying the night before her big test.

  7. Hearken • Giving your careful attention to something or someone. Hearken to the character assembly speaker because he or she usually has a very important message.

  8. Awe • A mixed feeling of fear and wonder. Storm chasers are often in awe of tornadoes which is what keeps them hunting storms.

  9. Distinctness • Clearly defined. • Unmistakable There is a distinctness about her nose that makes her face unforgettable.

  10. Concealment • The way you choose to hide something or someone Sammy thought her jewelry box was the perfect place of concealment for her letters.

  11. Waned • To grow less over time. My affection for gummy bears has waned as I have gotten older.

  12. Scantlings • Small amounts of something. The scantlings from the leftover fruit tray really made Patty wish she had gotten to party before all the food was eaten.

  13. Suavity • Graceful • Polite Anne’s suavity made all the teachers think she was a mature young lady.

  14. Bade • To force onward • Urged • Compelled Even though there was only one late night showing of The Hunger Games movie, I still bade my mom to take my friends and me.

  15. Audacity • Bold courage • Daring (to take a dare…to take risks) I cannot believe he had the audacity to ask me for another brownie after he spit the last one out on the floor.

  16. Reposed • To lay in rest I caught Betty napping on the sofa, and she looked carefree in her repose.

  17. Derision • Ridicule…(to mock or taunt) After months of suffering derision from her peers, Julie asked her mom if she could move to a school with kinder students.
