Our role in the community… • The library is much more than a place to simply check out books. We consider CCPL to be an agent of community development, one that seeks to inspire, raise awareness, entertain, and educate. By continually expanding and updating our resource collection, organizing free classes and programs, and working alongside other educational, business, and non-profit agencies, we strive to enhance both individual and community well-being.
CCPL Mission Statement • The mission of the Cumberland County Public Library is to provide quality programs and services that fulfill educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of the entire community in an atmosphere that is welcoming, respectful, and professional. • Residents of Cumberland County will: • have the information they need to succeed at school, at work, and in their personal lives; • have reading, viewing, and listening materials that stimulate their thinking, enhance their knowledge of the world, and improve the quality of their leisure time; • discover the joy of reading and develop a love of learning; • enjoy a high level of access to electronic information resources.
FREE Services & Programming • County-wide bookmobile service • Genealogy resources • 8 public computer workstations • Unlimited Wi-Fi access • Daily Courier Journal/Lexington Herald & local weekly newspaper • Audio books, DVDs & magazines • Copy/fax/scan services • Test proctoring • Interlibrary loan services • New York Times bestsellers, award-winning childrens’ books, and a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction • Unlimited paperback check-out • Universal Class – Patrons have access to over 500 online courses • Free access to E-books • 2 monthly Book Clubs • A monthly Crafters Club • 2 weekly Card Clubs • Weekly “Story Hour” for preschool children • Outreach programs at local daycares, Head Start, adult day cares, nursing home, and after-school programs • Monthly craft/nutrition programs with the Extension Office • 4-week “Summer Reading Program” for families
Additional Resources/Programs • “Imagination Library” Sponsor and Community Partner • Provide free coloring sheets and offer a coloring club • Organize food drives/“Food for Fines” and “Amnesty Week”s • Free outdoor movie nights, May-September • Showcase murals on interior and exterior of building (completed by local artists) • Host town hall forums and political meet & greets • Host annual two-day “How-To” Festival • Assist patrons with resumes, job applications, legal/medical forms • Create YouTube promotional videos, radio ads, and a weekly newspaper column • Partner with CCES 2nd grade – staff visit 3 times/week to help with reading skills • Recognize a local “Teacher Leader of the Month,” August-May • Recently established a Homeschool Advisory Council • Provide meeting space for individuals and non-profit agencies • Display local artists’ work and set up book signings/readings for local authors • Host speakers from the Kentucky Humanities Council • Offer “How-To” Classes and allow local artisans to use community room • Organize and perform “Murder Mystery Dinners”

Community partnerships • Allow new business owners to conduct informational sessions at the library • Invite local artisans to teach “How-to” classes • Host political “meet & greets” &“Meet Your Candidates” forums • Display work of local artists and photographers • Partner with other community agencies to write grants • Library staff serve on a number of community committees • Hold food drives for local agencies • Plan diverse programs to reach diverse community groups

(Based on 2014-2015 Annual Report) • Cumberland County population: 6745 • Registered library users: 4612 • Library square footage: 6221 sq. ft. • Annual library visits: 16,800 • Annual bookmobile visits: 1100 • Public computer sessions: 3249 (does not include the sizeable number of patrons & visitors using wireless) • Books in circulation: 25,343 • Book check-outs: 20,328 • DVD & audio book check-outs: 10,189 • Program attendance: 3597
Accountability • Hold monthly board meetings and advertise date/time in our weekly newspaper column and in our foyer • Have an approved “Long Range Plan” on file and annually review our “Policies and Procedures” • Present our tax rates in person at the designated fiscal court meeting • Have either kept our property tax rate the same or lowered it the past four years • Complete and submit all required Kentucky Department of Local Government forms • Complete and submit all required Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives forms • Have an audit completed every four years • Monitor staff Continuing Education credits and ensure all certifications are up-to-date • Attend conferences and meetings that keep staff informed and inspired
