  1. Specialized Cells Cells have jobs too!! Start a New Page Add it to your TOC

  2. Learning Target Write it down I can explain why all cells do NOT look the same.

  3. Percy Harvin • Position: Wide Receiver • Job Description: Catches passes and runs with the ball

  4. Adrian Peterson • Position: Running Back • Job Description: Takes handoffs and runs with the ball

  5. Jared Allen • Position: Defensive End • Job Description: Sack the quarterback

  6. Ryan Longwell • Position: Kicker • Job Description: Kicks field goals

  7. So what…? Do all of these players have the same purpose? NO! …and neither do cells. Cells are specialized like players on a football team with specific functions or jobs.

  8. Quick Think Can you think of cells that we have studied in class with different jobs? Here are some HINTS

  9. Structure and Function • Structure: what something is like (both inside and out) • Texture, Shape, Color, Strength, etc. • Function: what something does (its job)

  10. Structure and Function of a Cell • The structure of a cell can tell us a lot about what the function of that cell is. • Just like the players on the football team, a defensive end is going to have a different body type from a kicker.

  11. Some Examples of Specialized Cells • What kind of cell is it? • Red blood cell • What is its function/job? • Carry Oxygen (and CO2) around the body • Why do you think it looks the way it does? • Round = doesn’t get stuck!

  12. Some Examples of Specialized Cells • What kind of cell is it? Nerve cell • What is its function/job? Carry signals (messages) around the body • Why do you think it looks the way it does? Long= signals go far away Branched = signals go to many cells at once

  13. Some Examples of Specialized Cells • What kind of cells are these? • Skin cells • What is its function/job? • Protects our insides • Why do you think it looks the way it does? • Flat & Layered = keeps outside stuff from getting inside!

  14. Quick Check “All cells look and function the same.” Explain (with EVIDENCE) why you agree or disagree with the statement. I agree/disagree because…

  15. Specialized Cell Comparisons - Start a New Page - Add it to your TOC

  16. Draw this chart (whole page)

  17. Specialized Cell Comparison We are going to be reading about different kinds of specialized cells. • You will be given a group number. • Choose any article with the same number. • Read and complete the chart (left side) • Share to complete right side (with a different type of cell).

  18. Period 2 Groups

  19. Period 3 Groups

  20. Period 4 Groups

  21. Period 5 Groups

  22. Design a Specialized Cell… • Draw a cell for the functions listed below. • Be Creative! Draw whatever you think of!!! • Think about: • How does the way it looks help it to fulfill its job? • How do its parts (inside and outside) help it do its job? Job Description: • Roams the body looking for foreign invaders • Attacks/engulfs foreign invaders it encounters • Digests and destroys invaders that it engulfs

  23. Macrophages One type of white-blood cell Part of your immune system – helps fight invaders!

  24. Quick Check • Write the chemical reaction for Photosynthesis.(show what goes in AND what comes out) • Write the chemical reaction for Respiration. (show what goes in AND what comes out)
