  2. Revolution in Latin America • For centuries regions of Central and South America were colonized by Europeans. • In 1800, almost all of Central and South America belonged to Spain. Brazil belonged to Portugal. All of the islands in the Caribbean belonged to Spain, France, Great Britain, or the Netherlands. • With the ideas from the Enlightenment, the success of the American Revolution and the French Revolution, it sparked changed in Latin America. • The struggle for independence can be seen in Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba.

  3. Haiti • Toussaint L'Ouverture was born a slave but became the leader of the Haitian revolution. • More than 70,000 slaves worked the sugar and coffee plantations. • The French wanted to end the rebellion, they passed laws first giving rights to free blacks and then abolishing slavery all together.

  4. Dominican Republic • Haiti took control over the D.R. from Spain. • This lasted 22 years before the Haitians were forced out of the Dominican Republic. • In 1844, Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez ledtherebellion and helpedgain independence.

  5. Cuba • Cuba wanted to be free of colonial Spanish rule and end slavery. • There were 3 revolutions. The last resulted in the US being brought in and started the Spanish American war. • Jose Marti was a revolutionary who helped gain Cuba’s independence from Spain.

  6. Imperialism • Imperialism is when one country takes over another country and turns them into a colony of the mother country. • Reasons for Imperialism: to become competitive, to increase status, enforce racial bias, social Darwinism, control natural resources, and increase industry in the mother country. • The negative to side to imperialism is the mother country takes the natural resources and exploits the colony. On the positive, sometimes the mother country will build schools, hospitals, roads in the colony. • Examples of Imperialism are Great Britain and China, Great Britain and India, Spain and Mexico, Dutch and Indonesia.

  7. Industrial Revolution • Started in the late 1700’s through the 1800’s in England. • The creation of factories spawned people to move from farms to the cites. • With the creation of industry/factories goods were produced quicker, and in higher quantities. A middle class was created. Employment increased as factories were created. New items were invented. • On a negative side, factories employed small children who were paid poorly and often injured. Women were not treated equally. Cites became crowded and disease ridden. Pollution increased.
