  2. Buddhist beliefs and practices are largely based on the teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama. • Siddhartha Gautama is known as the Buddha. • There are two major branches recognized: Theravada and Mahayana. • Buddhism is most popular within Asia, estimation 1.2-1.7 billion in the world.

They believe in Samsara which is “the cycle of birth and death” • Buddhists reject the belief of a permanent or unchanging, eternal soul. • Buddhists believe in the Torah or Quraan. • The Buddha identified the threefold training as higher virtue, higher mind, and higher wisdom. • Buddhism also has a concept of Nirvana which means that there is craving and ignorance and therefore suffering and the cycle of involuntary rebirths.

  4. The Mahayana Buddhists believe there are innumerable other Buddhas in other universes. • The Theravada commentary says that Buddhas arise one at a time in this world element, and not at all in the others. • They practice yoga and meditation.
