  1. Self Reflection Collage Sarah hoggatt

  2. Initial thoughts: First piece of writing • “I can honestly say that English is my favorite subject; I'm in love with the language. I'm in love with all language. Spanish came to me very easily in my high school foreign language courses. I was apart of my schools newspaper. I wrote articles and columns about everything under the sun. My experience level is below par, but I'm definitely ready to expand my horizons. English 101, bring it on.” • I thought that because I enjoy the English subject this would be a piece of cake. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This has been one of the hardest courses I have ever been in.

  3. First time watching wall-e Blog post Comment “Yes, communication is a key question in Wall-e. How we communicate; what we recognize as communication; who we recognize as capable of communication. I think you’re asking some great questions that could lead to a analysis essay down the road. Great!” -Cindy • “This movie sparked quite a bit of thinking inside of my head. I started pondering the importance of communication. Why do we communicate? What is the purpose? What are our goals? I know that goals and motives are important in communication. Realizing what we want out of our relationships is key. Everything happens for a reason.”

  4. First essay Last essay ““LARGE”, this word is the central focus of the movie Wall-E. Our nation is obsessed with everything big. The creators of Wall-E were predicting our future with this film; every scene has symbolism. The company “Buy n Large” represents a whole plethora of issues including overconsumption and our government. The amount of trash and destruction of earth is a hint at global warming and America’s carbon footprint. The evolution of humans on the axiom illustrates the stereotypical lazy American. Wall-E is clearly not just another Disney movie; this is a realistic depiction of what our world is coming to. There is no such thing as a “quick fix” for these enormous issues. As our nation gets larger, our chance of Wall-E coming true grows with us.” • “My environment exists within me. Everything that I choose to let affect me becomes a part of ‘Sarah’. Everyone is different. Thus, my environment could be anything. As for me, I consider my environment to be mostly my thoughts/feelings/emotions. I am more in tuned with myself than my tangible surroundings. With this being said, any experience in my life could drastically change my environment.”

  5. Introductions • The last slide was quoting my introductions from my first and last essays. Looking back on what I’ve written, I can see a huge difference. My most current essay has a much stronger introduction that hooks the reader. • Big Difference

  6. Analysis comparison X Files analysis Wall-e analysis “When it comes to the situation that we have put ourselves in, there is no such thing as a “quick fix”. Sometimes it seems like the government is trying to put Band-Aids over places that need stiches or surgery. The creators of Wall-e hit us with this frightening possibility of what could happen and then put the “Disney touch” at the end. The ending credits of the film are the most important features. Once the humans and robots arrive on the dead earth, they begin rebuild and recolonize. Suddenly everything is back to normal. All of a sudden, there are species of animals. There are bodies of water. Somehow these people are able to survive upon virtually nothing. Pastures and crops are planted; earth is able to thrive. The people and robots are aware of their surroundings.” • “None of this ever would have happened if they did their job correctly. In the episode, it was implied that this tree was chopped down because of its size. The larger the tree, the more material. The more material, the more wood. The more wood, the more money. Everything comes back to money. No one ever would have thought that money would have killed them. Money can kill you, believe me. Greed can kill you; all of us saw it happen. We’ve beaten upon nature for a long time now, but be careful. Nature fights back”

  7. Analysis improvement • On my first analysis, I had no idea what I was doing. I couldn’t even define analysis at the time. Clearly, I was in no position to write an analysis of the x-files. Most of my analysis was summary. On my Wall-e analysis essay, I clearly analyzed many aspects of the film. Not only did I rock the analysis component, I supported my claims. I can officially say that I know how to write an analysis essay.

  8. What I’ve learned • I’ve learned much more than expected in English 101. Coming into this course, I expected an easy A. I was confident in my writing abilities. Frankly, I was arrogant. What I didn’t know what that I had never been challenged before. I had never had my limits pushed. After the first or second week, I was fairly intimated. Thankfully, I made it. I overcame all of my challenges and came out stronger in the end. When I think of what’s to come, I feel the need to quote myself. English 102, bring it on.

  9. Moving on • I now know that English 102 is going to be difficult. It’s going to challenge me. I am going to have my boundaries pushed. But I can handle it. It won’t be easy, but I’ll come out a stronger writer in the end. It won’t be easy but I’ll appreciate it in the end, just like now.
