  2. What is WHS? WHS is about the health, safety and welfare of all people in the workplace.

  3. Legal framework • Nationally uniform WHS legislation. • Work Health & Safety Act 2011 • Work Health & Safety Regulations • The purpose of the Act and Regulation is to protect the health, safety and welfare of all workers and of all other people who might be be affected by the work

Duties of PCBU (Person Carry on Business or Undertaking The PCBU is responsible for: • Ensure health and safety of workers • Ensure health and safety of any person who may be at risk from work carried out by the business • Provide and maintain safe work environment • Ensure safe use, handling, storage of plant, structure and substances • Provide workers with information, instruction and training in WHS related matters • Monitor health of worker • Duty to consult with workers and Health & Safety Representatives (HSR) • More information: https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/laws-and-compliance/electrical-safety-laws/duties

Duties of Workers Workers must: • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others at the workplace • Cooperate with their employer to enable compliance with the WHS legislation • Follow all lawful instruction to comply with WHS legislation Everyone at the workplace must: • Not interfere with or misuse items provided for health, safety and welfare purposes • Not hinder aid to an injured worker • Not disrupt the workplace by creating health or safety fears • Follow all lawful instruction to comply with WHS legislation

Health & Safety Officers • It is the duty of an officer of a PCBU to ensure the PCBU complies with Health and Safety duties and obligations. • Acquiring and keeping current information on WHS matters • Understand the nation and operations of the work and associated hazards and risks • Ensures PCBU has and uses current and appropriate resources and processes to eliminate or reduce risks to health & safety • Ensures PCBU has appropriate processes to receive and consider information about incidents, hazards and risks to responds in a timely manner • Ensures PCBUs has, and implements processes for complying with their duties and obligations. • https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/injury-prevention-safety/managing-risks/health-and-safety-representatives-and-health-and-safety-committees

  7. WHS consultation • Collaborate process between PCBU and any workers • Provide opportunities for employees to express their views about WHS issues • Ensure employees’ views are taken into account prior to decisions being made regarding health and safety • PCBU must consult workers when: • Identifying hazards and assessing risks • Proposing changes • Resolving health & safety issues • How to provide information and training relating to WHS • https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/injury-prevention-safety/injury-prevention-and-management

  8. Hazard identification Possible ways to identify hazards? • safety inspections • task analysis • complaints • staff meetings • regular maintenance requests • consultation • observation • records of injury, illness and near-miss records

  9. Assess the risk Consider what might happen Likelihood Severity

  10. Hierarchy of controls Controls should be considered in the following order: • Eliminate the hazard • Substitute the hazard • Isolate the hazard • Use engineering controls • Use administrative controls • Use personal protective equipment

  11. Injury management If you are injured at work: • Notify the employer/workplace manager • Complete the register of injuries • Consult a doctor where necessary • Authorise the doctor to provide relevant information to GIO and DET • Participate in a return to work plan

  14. Your rights & responsibilities You have a work health and safety duty to yourself and to others.
