  2. ELA Prototype Overview • Developed 3 for each grade level K-12 • Revised as MEAP assessment has evolved • Used to immerse students in the processes and products required to successfully complete the MEAP assessment

  3. Prototypes Today • 1 prototype is embedded in Toolbox 1 • 2 prototypes are included with Toolbox 2 • They are not embedded • They are used as needed • They are good for monitoring progress

  4. Toolbox Overview • Developed 3 for each grade level 2-7 (1 for grade 8) • Revised as MEAP assessment has evolved • Used to help teachers help students perform more successfully on the MEAP assessment • Used to help teachers implement effective practices in English Language Arts instruction

  5. Toolbox 1 Overview • Developed for Grades 2-8 • Reviews prior year’s Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) • Provides effective practices in ELA instruction

  6. Toolbox 1 • Administered: • Grade 2………in May • Grades 3-5….first 12 days of school • Grades 6-8….first 20 days of school

Toolbox 1 • Provides 12 day-by-day instructional plans for Grades 2-5 and 20 for Grades 6-8 • Provides instruction that supports student completion of each section of the MEAP: • Reading comprehension • Writing in Response to Reading • Writing from Knowledge and Experience • Constructing a Peer Response

  8. Toolbox 1 • Provides practice in test taking • Provides effective practices: • Notebooking • Revising and editing in context • Word study • Analogizing across texts • Comprehension strategies • Narrative writing strategies

  9. Toolbox 1 • Day-by-day Instructional Plans • Lesson overview • GLCE alignment • Materials needed • Directions • Scripted lessons if needed • All documents needed to complete lessons are provided immediately following the lesson

  12. Toolbox 2 Philosophy • Each part of the MEAP writing assessment is: • considered a genre • taught through genre study • Inquiry or Constructivistic approach

  13. Toolbox 2 • Inquiry approach • Noticing (immersion in the genre) • Creating theories • Naming writer’s craft • Finding excellent examples • Envisioning yourself completing similar tasks
