  3. The Beginning • In 1820, the Spanish government gave the Austin family a land grant in Texas • Stephen Austin leads a group of 300 Americans to Texas

  4. “You can stay” • Mexico wins their independence from Spain in 1821 • Mexico agrees to let Austin keep the land • If… • They become Mexican citizens and Roman Catholic • Thousands of Americans flood into the area • They are slave owners, Protestant and don’t follow Mexican laws • The Americans begin to want more representation in the Mexican government • Or to break away and create their own state of Texas

  6. Texas’ Declaration • In 1835, Texans rebelled against Santa Anna • They wrote a declaration explaining their grievances, but did not declare independence

  10. Annexing Texas • Sam Houston became President of the Republic of Texas • Should the United States annex Texas? • Annex – to add on • Pros – Gain a large amount of land • Cons – Upset the balance between Slave and Free states

  11. Keeping the Balance • President James Polk favored annexing Texas and promised to gain Oregon from the British • President Tyler annexed Texas three days before he left office • Polk negotiated a treaty with the British for Oregon Texas = Slave Oregon = Free

Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo • Mexico recognized the annexation of Texas • Ceded the Mexican Cession Territory • Included California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico • United States paid $18 million to Mexico • Gadsden Purchase ~ The US paid $10 million to Mexico for a narrow strip of Arizona and New Mexico
