  1. Status of the GIF++ Project GIF++ will be an irradiation facility at CERN combining a particle test beam with a strong gamma source in the SPS experimental area http://cern.ch/WP7/Documents/20080919_Specs_GIF++_V2.pdf M.Capeans

  2. GIF++ Specifications SPS West Area Particle beam: muon beam (~ 104 particles per spill traversing an area of 10 cm x 10 cm) with option of an electron beam. Beam momentum ~ 100 GeV Source: 137Cs (662 keV) ~10TBq; 2 Gy/h at 50 cm Photon rate attenuation in steps and up to 5 orders of magnitude Uniform Irradiation area: M.Capeans

  3. GIF++ Infrastructure Peripheral infrastructure to condition the areas surrounding and feeding into the irradiation areas and user set-ups (gas, cooling, cable trays, barracks, etc) and auxiliary infrastructure outside the irradiation area such as preparation and storage areas to minimize set-up times, and the space needed for users to follow up the tests Minimal infrastructure provided to users inside the irradiation area (dose rate monitoring, beam, environmental data, etc) GIF++ common control, safety and log systems M.Capeans

  4. GIF++ document: shopping list It’s crucial for RD51 to give feedback asap to contribute on the facility design. Gas supply is just an example!

  5. GIF++ Timescale June 08 – April 09 Design May 09 – Dec 09 Construction & Procurement • Collection of User Requirements • Proposals by AB • Approval of Final Technical Description Jan 10 – May 10 Commissioning May 10 Ready RD51 can contribute to the infrastructure and set up an area in the GIF++ for the use of the collaboration M.Capeans

  6. The current GIF For time request, please contact Richard.Fortin@cern.ch • Most gas detectors installed in LHC have been validated at the GIF (CMS-RPC; CMS-RPC-RB; CMS-RPC-RE; LHCb-MWPC; COMPASS; ATLAS-MDT; ATLAS-RPC; ATLAS TGC; ATLAS-CSC; ATLsMDT; ATLAS-MDT (Magnet); Alice TOF; Alice-AMS; Alice CPC; ALICE-RPC; RPC_gas_filtering) • Running facility in B.190, till end of 2009 • Source: 137Cs 574 GBq, dose ~48 mSv/h @ 1m • No particle beam since end 2004 • Uniform irradiation: 600 cm x 400 cm x 360 cm (height) M.Capeans
