  1. “For the Lord takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with salvation.”

  2. “Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.” -Hebrews 11:16

  3. Jesus Christ in the Old Testament Old Testament people who foreshadowed Jesus Christ through the Actions and Events of their lives

  4. Introduction • Jesus Christ is the key to what God had been pointing to in all the history of God’s people and His plan of Salvation. • One way to see this is to examine parallels between the Old Testament people, the events and actions of their lives with the life of Jesus in the New Testament.

  5. Introduction • Paul said that if the sin of one person, Adam, would cause many to die, how much more could the gift of God’s grace, by one person—Jesus Christ, cause many to be righteous and have eternal life (Romans 5:12). • The Bible is full of these parallels or “types.”

  6. Adam was the first person God made in His creation of the world. In His resurrection, Jesus Christ is the first person in God’s New Creation. Adam----------Christ Genesis 2:7The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 1 Corinthians 15:21-23 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits;

  7. Adam was called the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Adam----------Christ Romans 1:3-4 3 regarding His Son, who as to His human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Luke 3:38The son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

  8. Adam was God’s administrator or ruler in the Garden and creation. Jesus Christ is God’s Anointed King of the world. Adam----------Christ Matthew 1:16 ...and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ (the Anointed). Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

  9. Adam was the head or “crown” of God’s creation. Jesus Christ is the Head of the New Creation (the Church). Adam----------Christ Genesis 1:27 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Ephesians 1:22-2322 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

  10. Adam’s action brought consequences to his children causing them to inherit sin and death. Jesus’ actions brought consequences to God’s children, causing them to inherit righteousness and life. Adam----------Christ Genesis 3:17-19To Adam he said, "Because you ate from the tree..."Cursed is the ground because of you...19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; Romans 5:12 and 15Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin...15 If the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace...[in] Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

  11. So, it is written: “The first man, Adam, became a living being;” the last Adam, a life-giving spirit... 47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.” 1 Corinthians 15:45, 47-48 • First Adam • Living Being • Man of earth • Children of earth • Last Adam • Life giving Spirit • Man of Heaven • Children of Heaven

  12. Adam joined Eve and rebelled against God. Christ redeemed His Bride (the new Eve, the Church) by obeying God. Adam----------Christ Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

  13. Adam’s sin and shame required the death of an animal to cover it. Christ was shamed, stripped and killed on a cross to cover our sin and shame. Adam----------Christ Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made garments of animal skins for Adam and his wife and he clothed them.   Matthew 27:28-29, 31They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They...knelt in front of him and mocked him...31 After they had mocked him...they led him away to crucify him.

  14. Because of the actions of Adam, we experience isolation and loneliness. Instead of love and care for each other, we experience violence and hatred. Through Christ’s actions, we can experience true life, a close relationship with God and love and care for each other. Adam----------Christ

  15. Conclusion • Adam is a good example of a type or parallel to Christ. • This kind of comparison focuses on specific events or character traits rather than the person as a whole. • There are big differences between Adam and Christ, in fact they really are opposites. • It is not that Adam was LIKE Christ, but that “some features” of his life parallel that of Christ’s life.
